Future Car

As a sci-fi geek, the promise of the future is always on my mind. When I caught “FutureCar” on Discovery last night, I got genuinely excited at the concepts presented in the show. Discovery asks what the car of 2030 would look like and puts the question to a number of futurist designers. The designers present innovative ways of looking at personal transportation, turning those transitional spaces between work and home into something that can enhance, rather than frustrate, our lives. As a supplement to the show, Discovery also has a number of webisodes that follow seven interns enrolled in GM’s design internship as they design their visions of the future’s car.

I have to say, I nearly quit my job on the spot to dedicate the rest of my life to innovative future design. The concepts presented in the show truly challenge the current paradigms of human transportation and interaction. A car is literally a box on wheels and has been since its inception. But what if a car could be more than just a box. Hell, extend that metaphor to the office place. An office is a series of boxes within boxes. Who’s to say it has to be this way. I would love to explore these kinds of design challenges. And it’s quite refreshing to see people taking these challenges and turning them on their edges.

I think it’s a multi-part series with the next episode airing next Wednesday. If you have the chance, definitely check it out.

I watched all of the first episode last week and loved it, only caught parts this week, but the “skateboard” looked like a brilliant idea. It really is an excellent show (and on right before mythbusters, which no longer competes with Lost!)

If the skateboard was on the market now, I would totally buy that piece in an instant! Completely cutsomizable, spacious, energy efficient, clean fuel cells, and just plain cool!
