On May 9, 2008, Earth will stand still once again. Fox has confirmed that they’re remaking The Day the Earth Stood Still to fill out their gigantic 2008 slate. When will the madness end! If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. Out of all the classic sci-fi films 50s and 60s, The Day the Earth Stood Still holds up over time. The rampant fear that grips a nation when faced with the unknown is certainly a theme that we can relate to in these days of fear and terror. In fact, I think it’s actually pretty scary how relevant this movie could be today.

Why not re-release it to theaters? Why waste all the money to produce this thing when we pretty much know it’s going to be utter shit. There is nothing about this remake that could possibly interest me in the slightest. Okay, perhaps if Scarlett Johansson ran around topless for a good half-hour I might be inclidned to at least rend the thing, but this remake is dead on arrival. No amount of movie magic can improve on this already classically awesome sci-fi film. Just re-release it in all its original glory so that those of us who weren’t even born when it came out can see it on the big screen for the first time. Hell, I’d pay full price for that. I might even spring for popcorn!

Could not have said it better Myself. War of the Worlds was not improved for having received the Tom Cruise/Spielberg treatment… Starship Troopers likely has Robert A. Heinlein spinning dervishly in his grave… I realize that hollywood prefers a “pre-marketed package” and classic films already have the warm fuzzies in the target market… But WHY spend megabucks on a remake of a classic genre film and then PHUCK IT UP????

What they should really do… .is take some semi-classic B-movies, you know that “great idea, badly done” stuff out there… and do it RIGHT. I mean really kick it’s ass.

    Banzai!

Yet another great movie will be ruined due to no one writing new good movies. :(

Take all the money they’re going to through at this thing for special effects, put it into a solid cast, and let THEM do the work.

Hell, put Gort in silver spandex again for al I care. If the characters are solid, I won’t fault Hollywood for remaking it. Old films can be given a fresh coat of paint without ruining them, but knock down the walls and then we’re gonna have fisticuffs!

I believe that Darth Vader said it best: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Day the Earth Stood Still is my favorite sci-fi movie of all time. it pains me to no end to think that it would be remade today.

They would remove all the political commentary and add unnecessary explosions and various other crap. This is an incredible movie. It came out at a time when people were still in the red scare and this movie helped make people aware of what was really going on. They’d never get away with that today.

I can honestly say this is a very painful piece of news.

No good can come from this…. I remember the first time that I saw this, it was a few months after the hugh power outage on the east coast of the US, and I remember how real the power outage sceen was. For all it’s CG magic, that’s something that modern Hollywood can’t seem to do anymore, make things feel real.

I swear, one year they should be like “Sorry last year there were no good movies, thus there will be no oscars this year. Maybe next year.”
