That’s right folks, your United States Postal Service is helping Lucas expand his ever-growing Empire. To help celebrate the 30th anniversary of Star Wars, the USPS will place about 320 of these special R2 units in all of their 80-something postal districts.

Remember, Star Wars fans, these are real mail boxes with real mail inside them. Stealing one is a real federal offence. Yeah, like that’ll stop you. However, I’m willing to bet that the USPS auctions them off when the anniversary is up. I can’t see these things lasting much more than a year.

It’s quite amazing to me that a federal institution would go to such lengths to celebrate a movie franchise. Stamps are one thing, but whole mail boxes is quite a feat. In some respect, it just goes to show the power of the Force. Of course, the USPS is kind of hurting for cashola these days. With the wide spread of electronic communications, we hardly need to snail mail anything any more.
