Doug Jones on Lawrence Fishburne

Doug Jones found out that Lawrence Fishburne was going to voice the Silver Surfer when the rest of us did. As far as Jones knew, he was hired to do both the motion capture and the voice for the Surfer:

This is a painful issue for me. For any actor, it would be. No actor wants to see a portion of their performance taken away, myself included, especially when I really like the sound of the Surfer that I gave. A lot of people involved with the film told me that they got goose bumps and chills when I would talk as the Silver Surfer, so I am sorry to see that go.

Kelsey Grammer David Hyde Pierce replaced his voice in the first Hellboy. Now Lawrence Fishburne replaces his Surfer. You know, I’ve heard him voice Abe in the Hellboy Animated movies. He sounds pretty fucking good. It would have been nice to hear Doug Jones out of the Surfer’s mouth since he performed him. He has been signed for a three picture deal so maybe he’ll get his chance in the next FF flick.

DOH: David Hyde Pierce replaced Doug Jones, not Kelsey. Thanks Taellosse

Minor correction–his voice wasn’t replaced by Kelsey Grammer in Helloby, but by David Hyde Pierce. You’re close, because Pierce played Grammer’s brother in Frasier, but they are, in fact, different people.

Hellboy, dammit. That’s what I meant to say.

Not sure how commonly known this is, but David Prowse did originally provide the voice of Darth Vader. Apparently, he sucked. They brought in James Earl Jones once Star Wars was in the can. This, on the other hand, seems like the studio bringing in a big name to try to boost box office. Imagine how Gollum would have been with someone other than Andy Serkis doing the voice. It would have lost something. As much as I like Lawrence Fishburne, I think we may have lost something here.
