King of Wha?
Tuesday, June 5th, 2007 at 9:17 am by JamiNew Line just picked up the rights to make a feature adaptation of, get this, King of Kong, a documentary about gamers seeking ultimate glory as the Donkey Kong champion. I’m a little confused because the documentary is going to hit theaters this summer thanks to Picturehouse who has distribution rights. It’ll probably hit the indy theaters so I guess it makes some sense for New Line to open a feature version to more theaters.
Who cares, this sounds like a lot of fun. Okay, so it’s not entirely a new concept. The Wizard easily comes to mind as a movie with a similar premise. But it’s not a sequel and though the New Line version will indeed be a remake, this still sounds like something worth checking out. I just hope they don’t pretty it up too much. I imagine that gamers competing for supreme bragging rights in “Donkey Kong” are just average schmoes looking for escape.
