Gundam Double O

I should just make a damn Gundam category.

A new Gundam series is coming to a TV near you, Gundam Doube O (probably more like Gundam OO)! Here’s a teaser-trailer.

The official site is http://www.gundam00.net/index.html which is, of course, all in Japanese.

Tracked down some information on a forum that, besides the show info, is non-English:

Setting
The series will be set in 2307 AD of the Gregorian calendar, following four mobile suit pilots termed Gundam Meisters (ガンダムマイスター, Gandamu Maisutā?), who are part of a private military organization called Celestial Being, which is dedicated to eradicating war with the use of Gundams.The main character is 16-year old Setsuna F. Seiei, a quiet young man who grew up in war-torn Middle East and a Gundam Meister since two years ago. He pilots the Gundam Excia.

Gregorian calendar, huh. Another alternate universe. Is Tomino really no longer interested in Universal Century stories any more? I’m a U.C. snob when it comes to my Gundam. The original series turned the giant robot genre into a gritty war story focusing on the plight of the characters rather than flashy toy designs. Throughout the U.C. shows and O.V.A.s, they’ve maintained that realistic feel. If there was ever going to be a giant mech war, this is what it would feel like. The alternate reality Gundams get away from that realistic feel with gimmicky mech designs and little character development.

However, I’ll probably give Double O a try. I didn’t think I’d like G Fighter Gundam at all and it turned out to be one of my favorite alternate reality Gundam shows.

    I was one of the few that liked Gundam X. It was post-war, and it was basically showing how the few people remaining tried to tear each other apart.

    But I’m fairly tired of these under-20 people piloting multi-million dollar machines. We need to see more hardened veterans who look like they had to take, you know, years of *training* to pilot these things. 15-year olds is nice and retarded in my book, even if it is far in the future in some “alternate” universe. Did they just do away with work permits or something?

    That’s one thing I liked about UC. Aside from 0079, and aside from the stealing of the gundams in 0083, you saw nothing but military personnel in the mobile suits. No prepubescent yaoi tweens who are also, by chance, expert philosophers and are able to debate the meaning of life during intense combat… something about that just makes you go “hmmm….”

    Jami - I have the feeling that he’s reluctant to go back to the UC stuff after the Zeta movie. I can’t put my finger on why, though. Maybe he feels the ‘main story’ of the UC universe is done.

    Torso_boy - Umm… while there were a lot of military personnel piloting the mobile suits, the main pilots in UC weren’t initially actual military. ^_^;; Kamille was a civilian who just was pissed at the Titans. Judo was a civilian who wanted to sell the Zeta for some cash. And poor, poor Usso was… well, 12. ^^; But they still weren’t bishy boy pilots who were faux-philosophers. XD

    As far as I can recall, only 0080 and 0083 really had any main characters who were actually in the military from the start. ^^;

    Buh, I hated G fighter Gundam. The Devil Gundam had a cool design, but that’s about it.

    I’m a UC fan as well.

    I loved Gundam X, particularly the ending, which was wonderfully ironic if you were familiar with the endings of other Gundam series.

    I think the 15-year-old boy pilot things has at least a little to do with Japanese tradtion. Until the 1800s, 15 was when you were officially an adult, including the final coming-of-age ceremony for the aristocratic and samurai classes. (other ages of importance: 12, 7, 5, 2, and 50 days; i could be slightly on off on the younger ones). Worse, by Western reckoning, they’d have actually been between 13 and 15, depending on when in the year they were born!
