Thundercats Now Animated

The idea of a live-action Thundercats movie is stupid. If I wanted to see Cats, I’d go to the Kennedy Center. Okay, so maybe the idea of Bobby Lashly as Panthro is all kinds of awesome. But seriously, a live-action Thundercats is bad juju.

Warner Brothers has heard the cries of the internets and confirmed that Thundercats will not be live-action but animated. Will it be 2D or 3D or a hybrid? I’m actually kind of sick of the 3D kiddie movies. Sure, I got to see most of them because that’s the kind of nerdy CG whore I am. But I’d like to see something along the lines of a Spirited Away or Howl’s Moving Castle that combines 2D character animation with 2D and 3D background work that’s subtle enough that you might not know the difference.

I won’t be surprised if this turns out to be 3D. CG hair and fur experts, get your resumes at the ready! I foresee a lot of furries in the future!

Depends on their budget. 3D hair/fur is expensive, both to model and to render. You also need a good renderer to do shadows from it and other effects.

Probably much cheaper to hand-draw if you’re dealing with a smallish budget, though a big studio (think Pixar, who developed most of the tools for hair stuff in Monsters, Inc) could do this well with work.
