Editorializing Gonzales

Speaking of Alberto Gonzales, on Wolf Blitzer’s “Situation Room” yesterday, one of his analysts described Gonzales as a “political pinata” for the administration. Pinata? Really? What, did he give out candy during his hearings?

“Mr. Gonzales, were you involved in the firing of those attorneys?”
“Hey homes, I don’t remember! But here’s a bag of bon bons! ODALAY! VIVA LA RAZA!”

How fucking racist! If he was Asian, would they be claiming “he’s taking a kamikaze dive for the administration?” I expect off hand remarks like that from blow hards like Bill O’Reilly or Rush Limbaugh or even Carlos Mencia. But a news organization? Completely unprofessional and uncalled for. Save that kind of editorializing for the opinion pages and the pundits.

Can you tell I’m becoming a little disenchanted here? Man, working back in D.C. has sort of sparked the militant angry ranting within.

I honestly don’t think the analyst meant it racially, though his choice of words was unfortunate. I think he was referencing that Gonzales is taking a lot of blows in defense of his own actions as well as those of the administration. Which is true, he’s taking heat for more than just what he’s responsible for. He did take a job he’s unqualified for thanks to a guy who’s been using him as his token hispanic friend, and was responsible for defending the administration against the Constitution, as opposed to the other way around, which is his real job. He also had no problem firing attorneys not for doing their jobs badly but for disagreeing with El Presidente (reference to SA dictators calling themselves democratic leaders). But instead of just removing him from his job, the Democrats have sort of used him as a witch hunt target, trying to find some way to pillory him as an example to the Republicans, and to strengthen their case against the administration. Pretty sad behavior on both sides of the political spectrum, in my humble opinion.
