Bourne, James Bourne

Action designer Dan Bradley (action what? I thought they were called fight choreographers) who coordinated the fight sequences of the last two Bourne films has joined up with the James Bond film makers as the second unit director for the next Bond flick. Audrey and I just saw The Bourne Ultimatum this past weekend and absolutely loved it. The action scenes were filmed in that quick cut, close up style that normally I detest. Somehow, it really worked in Ultimatum. The fight scene in the bathroom ranks as one of my all time favorites for a really geeky reason that I might explain later.

I felt Casino Royale really set the bar high for Craig’s Bond. His second film is going to have to kick the first square in its man parts. And I think Bradley is the man to kick things up to notches never before seen! BAM!

Well the reason it worked in Ultimatum was because it gave you a break from the constant swaggering and shaking from what should have been static scenes. So at least the camera shaking and moving around made since to your poor little brain.
I’m just sayin. It was a great movie though, but the ACTUAL Director of Photography should have been kicked in the teeth.

Was it the book? The book was totally awesome. Although technically that was in the living room, not the bathroom.

Ah, that’s right, it’s the living room. My favorite part was the guy’s counter to the wrist lock. I always theorized that that’s how you counter the thing, but I’ve never seen anyone do it until that scene!

I think that wrist lock counter, while looks spectacular, only works in the movie. If a wrist lock is applied correctly, you wouldn’t be able to get the momentum to pull off something like that, even if you did you’ll probably break your wrist. Plus Bourne could have totally reapply the lock, or pull him down, or throw him while both of the other guy’s feet is off the ground. At least that’s what I learned based on the few Aikido lessons I took in college.

Not only that, noein, but Bourne quickly countered with the double-leg sweep as soon as the guy landed showing that it doesn’t necessarily help you gain an upper hand. Also, the fight eventually went into the bathroom in the movie which is why you may have been confused Jami.
