Super Geek Wars: Major Kusanagi vs. Battle Angel Alita

Friday, October 5th, 2007 at 2:04 am by Jami

To my surprise, Riddick won the last match! Wow, I thought for sure the Fett fans would rally. This week we’re pitting Major Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell: SAC against Battle Angel Alita from Last Order. I’m also trying something new this week so instead of just a static sketch and some text, here’s a sketch cast to set up the match.

It’s elite soldier versus ultimate street fighter, calculation versus passion. Who takes it? Who’s machine reigns supreme!?

Never mind the fight, this sketchcasting looks hot. Must give it a try.

I say, everything is in the imaginos body. She can do pretty much everything she wants with it.including dodging bullets. Or blocking them with plasma.

Just a thought since you think you have trouble talking and drawing simultaneously — if you can, just do the sketch, and then record yourself and splice them together.

I’m abstaining this week, as I don’t know either of the characters so voting would be unfair.

I really just hate GitS, so my vote is going to be biased today.

Greg, that’s a good thought. I liked the idea of sketchcasting because I didn’t have to edit anything together or save anything on my machine, but if it becomes too much of a bother, I might do what you suggest. We’ll see if I get the hang of this sketchcasting or not.

I think when having the battle between these two, you also have to take into consideration that the Major fights other cyborgs. Quite a bit. Seriously, so she would have some experience in fighting someone who’s been “upgraded” if you will. There is, also, (although, I don’t really know much about Alita) that skill set where she’s almost always hacking someone or something to get the mission done. The Major just isn’t happy until she gets to shoot someone, then hack a computer. I’ll go brush up on Alita anyway, just for the sake of being fair.

Ah! I knew I forgot to mention something. Yes, the Major likes to dive into cybords. But Dr. Nova tried to do the same thing to Alita and she fought him off quite easily. I think the Major would have a tough time diving into Alita.

Despite the Major’s qualities, I’ve got to go with Alita. Yes, she is less focussed, but when she becomes serious, nothing gets in her way. And frankly, I’ve always read her zoning out as a short-lived thing - usually while in a haze caused by massive damage. Then she’s right back at it, stronger than before.
I say the Major lands one hit, probably from a distance. That’s all she would get. And even if she could hit Alita again, none of her weapons have ever been so powerful as to do serious damage in so few hits (Relative damage. The weapons work great in GITS, but Alita is made of sterner stuff. Ok, maybe the anti-tank sniper rifle might do some harm, but the Major has never used that herself).
You can’t say the same about Alita. A strike from either the Panzer Kunst, the Damascus Blade, or a shot of plasma would do irreparable harm to the Major.

Also, let’s take a look at the cybernetics.
The Major’s body has - and always will be - a well balanced machine. When having taken serious damage, The Major just jumps to another body. Why? Because these cyborgs aren’t built to be used in a damaged state. And I don’t picture this fight as one with empty bodies lying around for the possessing. However, she has gone all the way and fought till total physical destruction.

Alita’s body, on the other hand, is made to be practically indestructible (this time). She even self repairs. But even if that weren’t the case, Alita has fought on when heavily damaged. Whatever the Major does to her, Alita will keep coming.

As for the hacking, Jami is right. The Major would try, but not with all that much success (that’s even if their systems were compatible).

    So Alita for me.

Forgive me if this was mentioned earlier and I missed it, but doesn’t the Major have that stealth camouflage ability? How are the Major’s chances with that and a high powered sniper rifle?

I agree with Direwolf. Can’t really imagine how Alita could lose against Kusanagi.
Regarding future pairups, how about teams? Like:
Lupin III, Daisuke Jigen, Fujiko Mine and Goemon Ishikawa XIII from Lupin III
    vs.
Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine and Ed (leaving ‘Ein’ out of consideration) from Cowboy Bebop?

Looks like Motoko is in the lead and she’s my favorite character of the two, but I voted for Alita since she’s technologically more advanced and has more battle experience that the major. But the Kusanagi is definitely hotter lol.

This is like pitting Ken from Fist of the Northstar versus Ryu from Streetfighter. I think Ryu would have the lead as well just on fandom, but realistically he doesn’t stand a chance against Ken.

The Major would have the advantage if she kept her distance, thanks to her active camo hacking and sharpshooting skills. Alita, on the other hand, is practically undefeatable up close and personal, plus her body’s far more advanced. Pretty tough one and they’re both among my favorite characters too. Guess I’ll go with Alita, just to give her a fighting chance in the polls.

I don’t think the major would have as a hard a time diiving Alita’s system as has been suggested. The freaky Doctor wasn’t nearly as experienced in “combat hacking” as Kusanagi. There’s a big diffecerence between “I build cyborgs” and “I hack them while fighting them”.

Glad someone mentioned the camo, I’d actually forgotten :)

Even if I didn’t think Motoko was the batter woman, I’d vote for her because Alita is an annoying self-righteous little sh**. ;)

    “Almost her physical equal?”

…No. Just no. I’m guessing base popularity might have a hand in the vote percentages there, because this is a seriously unbalanced match.

The only way I can see Alita’s Imaginos body being overcome is by being hacked. Mbadi managed it, when she first stepped out of the orbital elevator, and had her kissing his boots. Without any outside support to protect her from hacks, that might prove to be Alita’s fatal flaw.

    Oh! And an addendum:

Even without outside support, the only way Alita’s vulnerable to hacking is on physical contact, it seems. If things ever get that close, it’d probably be too late.

I disagree, man. Alita has never had to really defend against a hack on the level of what is seen in GitS. Also, Motoko’s camp would help a lot in closing the gap. I agree the Imaginos body is a much stronger (at least plasma weaponry-wise), but the psychological war is all the Major’s.

And, like I said earlier, Alita’s emo field will work against her.
