Super Geek Wars: Samus Aran vs. Storm

Friday, October 19th, 2007 at 3:17 am by Jami

Wow! Last fight was really close. Vash won by one percentage point!

This week, another ladies night. It’s Samus Aran vs. Storm.

It’s the ultimate battle between nature versus technology!

By the by, please excuse the mess. I’m still trying to figure out the best way to use the sketchcast jitsu. If it sounds choppy, please let me know in the comments. I might have to switch to something else.

UPDATE: Freaking GRRRRR! Checked out the cast on a PC and it’s still choppy and gross. Sorry sketchcast, you just don’t do it for me anymore. Poop. Sorry about the shitty quality here. Next week should be much better.

Erm… so basically, the only big chance of Storm is to land a lightning bolt on Samus, right? I was thinking perhaps super-duper-hyper ball Samus mode may go faster than lightning. Who knows…

Seriously, if they really are in an urban environment, chances are buildings around are full of lightning conductors that will attract lightning no matter what. Hence sheltering Samus from said bolts.

Then it’s just a matter of time before Samus finds a way to have Storm land somewhere, and buries her under a big pile of building debris…

From what I know of Storm.. she can’t exactly summon weather quickly. I’ve never read the comic, so I don’t have much to go on. But if this is the case, then as long as Samus can shoot her down before Storm sends a lightning bolt at her, Samus would win. Chances are though, Storm will be able to send that lightning bolt in time before Samus does anything.

As for sketchcast… I much preferred it before when you just had an image and a description anyway. Maybe if you can do just a voice post, and a separate completed image, that’d work well. Your description would go by faster too because you won’t have to talk and draw at the same time. Unless you want to do that, in that case just record your voice while you’re drawing the image. I just liked the clean art from before.

I’m going to try Snapz Pro for next week. That will allow me to work in my program of choice, photoshop, so that should make the drawing part look a little better. We’ll see how far I can get in ten minutes cause I plan on uploading the final result to the youtube. Or hell, I could just host the damn thing here. We’ll see.

On a completely unrelated note; I have a hueg glossy movie size teaser poster of Ironman hanging on my wall. It’s very sexy.

Y’know Jami, it isn’t like Samus hasn’t had any formal training. True, being a bounty hunter she probably has a learning curve much to do with improvisation. But in her youth, she trained under those nice Chozo who gave her that suit. The images that can be found on the 2 GBA Metroid games seem to suggest she practiced martial arts as well as wielding Chozo technology.

Another thing concerning the Chozo. It’s not a coincidence that in a lot of the the planets Samus lands on in her games (Zebes, SR388, Tallon IV, Aether) are found to have their technology. They are just that damned advanced and influential. The reason you don’t run into any of them in the games alive is that they thought if they were to progress any further as a civilization it would be harmful to the galaxy, so now they have moved themselves into isolation. On Tallon IV, you find out that the planet was used by the Chozo in an attempt to live more organic lives. They were largely successful, but another of their projects forced them to leave.

With the kind of technology Samus has access to, that allowed the Chozo to even shape the nature of and on a planet, I really think Storm has quite the odds against her.

    Geekdom FTW!

The Sketchcast works perfectly fine for about one minute. Then it slowly starts being choppy. As time goes on, the gaps in the audio get gradually longer until you just cannot follow what is being said. I’m using Firefox on an old G4 eMac running Panther, so YMMV.

Storm is nice and all, but she’s always been the demolitions/artillery member of the team. Takes a while to set up, but can do the greatest, most wide spread damage. Lightning isn’t her only trick: tornadoes, acid rain, atmospheric pressure changes. But physically, despite her training from Wolverine, Storm is no match for Samus.

So if Storm has the time to set up (i.e. take to the air while Samus is still ground-bound), she may be able to destroy enough of the surrounding area. But all it would take is one big hit and her concentration would break.

However, Samus just has too much going for her. Her suit is designed to withstand severe environmental conditions - including the vacuum of space. She has multiple powerful attacks, both ranged and close combat. Also, Storm’s speed doesn’t pose much of a challenge. And if she gets to use the gunship? No contest.

I’d like to note that often in the X-men comics Storm would defeat the other X-men in Danger Room training sessions while she didn’t have her powers.

Sketchcast sounded fine for me. But if you want to fire it you can try CamStudio or something. Am much as it pains me as a huge X-fan and Storm fan-girl. I’m going to have to give it to Samus. To win Storm would need to pop Samus out of her suit first. Which might be possible. But even if Samus was off her game that day, she’s bound to nail Storm with a lucky shot before she gets pealed.

I like Storm, but Samus is a bit too well-trained to be taken down by a force of nature.

There is also the armor component. Samus’s suit can probably take a weak lightning bolt (weak unless you give Storm her “preparation time” to build up her storms ‘hah’) but Storm is unarmored and generally running around in something skimpy. Samus has armor piercing weapons designed to take out very large very mean space pirates, often equiped with jet packs. Storm could not take more than one hit, two if she can lose a limb and survive. If you assume they can see each other at the start of the fight Samus can just fire a homing missile and it’s pretty much over unless Storm can shoot down a very small (the size of a human fist I believe) fast moving missile. One shot and Storm is Storm paste.

This match up just occurred to me. I know you’ve already done Star Wars and Evangelion but I thought a good match up would be an Eva vs an ATAT . Actually I am lying, I just want to see you draw an Eva lifting an ATAT up by the head as it guts the ATAT like a fish with its prog knife, it would take like five to ten ATATs to bring down an Eva. But in all nerd seriousness I think a match up between the ATAT the ultimate long range tank style mecha against a humanoid heavily shielded unit. Can semi stationary long range fire power beat a fast, agile, heavily armored/shielded close range combat unit. The Eva just happens to be the best example I can think of. It boils down to the ability to attack from long range vs being able to close distance and rip the enemy apart.
