Strike Back

I often speak in hyperbole and usually write with strong and completely biased convictions. However, when confronted with better informed opinions, I am more than willing to change my stance.

Thank you all who have written in to voice your opinions on the strike. It’s a fairly constructive discussion that I have found quite instructive. Brian K Vaughan’s and J. Michael Straczynski’s explanations of the reasons behind the strike make total sense to me now.

So, I’ve decided to flip flop and throw in my support for the writers. Not only that, I now firmly believe that comic artists need some sort of union. It’s appalling to me that Steve Ditko, co-creator of arguably one of the most recognizable and profitable characters across multiple mediums, never got a cut of that Spider-Man movie check or any of the other profitable ventures that his character design has raked in.

Screen writers may have it bad, but comic artist get it much worse. And while some writers are able to tackle multiple projects for multiple streams of income, artists are lucky to land a monthly gig and even then have trouble keeping up. Comic artists need some sort of protection so they can get fair compensation for their work.

I know it sounds a bit screwy, but I’m relieved that I can support the writer’s strike in good conscious. It’s tough down in the trenches and us artists aught to stick together. Kind of embarrassed that I spoke so harshly against it, but that’s what discussion is for. Thanks everyone!

Thanks for the support. We appreciate all the help we can get. Also, you’re right about the shaft that comic artists/writers get. Perhaps you have heard the horror story of Dan Decarlo, comic
creator of Josie and the Pussycats. Man never saw a dime when it came to the animation rights or
the live action movie. Truly a damn shame.

Any idea what the actual breakdown is for where all of our $20+ goes on a DVD? Who gets what amount? All we know currently is that writers get .04 cents.

    That leaves the rest.
