Wow, that brings back memories. My Dad use to bring that and MREs (Meal Ready to Eat) home after being out in the field when I was kid. I don't remember it tasting great but i do remember wondering how they could make ice cream so dry. Good times, good times.

It tastes like crap because it is dehydrated. That is why it has that powdery texture to it. It is dehydrated to make it lighter in weight. Water is one of the weird chemical compounds that is at its densest state in liquid form liquid>solid>gas. As a result removing the water allows weight to be saved thus saving the cost of space shuttle fuel and to forgo the freezer. The reason you don't remix it with water is that because it is a dairy. Have you ever frozen milk and then thawed it to drink it? Absolutely putrid. Water has little to no nutrients in and of itself so sucking about twenty to thirty slugs (American unit of mass) out of the food lets you save quite a bit fuel.

I think you're right, if they called it freeze dried candy, it would make a lot more sense. Space Ice Cream is a clever marketing tag.

Bah, I love space ice cream. Not for it's ice cream texture (which it doesn't have) but more as a generically flavored treat. I like how it melts in my mouth, I actually kinda like the flavors, and c'mon - it's SPACE ice cream!

Then again, perhaps things taste different when you're in orbit around the planet and your safe return isn't guaranteed.

As much as calling it space ice cream is a nifty selling point, it might be better touted as just some freeze dried candy. Tang doesn't taste much like orange juice either... but it's got a niche.

But I think Nelly's right, maybe it's made for zero gravity.

Maybe your problem is eating the space ice cream on Earth, in gravity. I, Nelly, am volunteering to go with you to a zero gravity environment to help you record your findings. Just let me know when you can go....

Dude I LOVE Space Ice cream! I used to love getting that stuff! I haven't had it since I was like 6 so maybe my tastes have evolved but if I was in space I'd totally chow down on that stuff all day!
