Unofficial SGW: Colonials vs. the Empire

Monday, December 3rd, 2007 at 11:28 pm by Jami

I know I’ve been slacking on the Super Geek Wars (SGW), so reader Kevin Bahrt sent me this:

It’s the Colonial army from Battlestar Galactica versus the Empire from Star Wars. Clearly, who ever did this has put much more time and effort into his ultimate battle than I have with my sketches. Oh wells.

I think a better match up would be the Cylons versus the Empire. Both have seemingly inexhaustible supplies of pilots to throw at each other. Both have giant, monolithic ships with hoards of fighters on board. Both are really ill tempered. Pitting Galactica against a fleet of Star Destroyers is a bit unfair. Although the pilots of the Galactica are much better than the Empire’s clone troops, there are so many more clones than there are Colonial pilots. Eventually, they’ll run out and the Empire will claim another victory.

How do you guys think these two fleets match up?

I don’t watch BG so I can’t comment on it, but from the bits and pieces I’ve caught, it looks like the Colonial Fleet is less a fleet than a lucky coincidence. It’s got the variety the Empire (lots of TIE fighters = strategy of mass production + sheer numbers) does not.

In a head-on fleet battle, numbers don’t necessarily equate victory: A (Super) Star Destroyer can be destroyed, or crippled, by an A-Wing with a death wish - the same probably goes for the BG ships (although there don’t seem to be any Interceptors - is this the Pre-Endor Empire?). I find it hard to believe that a triple-engined …thingy doesn’t have the shielding/armor of a Rebel Alliance fighter, though. And those TIE Fighters are paper with two green ‘pyewpyew’ guns - are the BG dudes that bad at shooting fighters down when they have vectored thrust at their disposal?

Plus, hey, battleships with either a Fold System or a DS drive. That changes _everything_. (Schlock Mercenary takes full advantage of this. For a while.)

Let’s not forget that the Empire was crippled by a single X-Wing, and all but destroyed by two of those and a converted freighter. I don’t have my copy of Sun Xu with me (since the move), but I recall a passage where, if your numbers are less than your enemy’s, you don’t attack head-on with everything you have. Either the BG dudes don’t know that in the show, or the creator of the video didn’t know that (that’s not to say it isn’t _kickass awesome_).

the video used the classic Galactica. THe new Galactica (from the Reimagined series) is much more heavily armed with tons of flak guns and anti-ship guns & missiles. And not to mention nukes :P So if the Star Destroyer went up against her, I’d bet she’d lose.

Also, even though the cyclon basestars look very scary, they’re actually less powerful than the colonial battlestars. But they do have a lot of (replacable) fighter

However, since it’s the battle of the classics, I’d put my money on the Star Destroyer.

So what, then? The BG universe doesn’t use energy weapons and - more importantly - shielding? If that’s the case, it’s still an even battle, since their enemy is using weapons and tactics they can’t be familiar with…
