Oh Oh Oh It’s Magic!

Let us continue with the beating of the One Dumbfuck Day horse, shall we.

Marty and Occasional Superheroine linked to JMS’s response to Joe Q’s explanation of why One Fuckedup Day is cool (hint: if you have to explain why your shitty story is cool, well, it probably isn’t) and I finally had a chance to read through the particulars. Here’s my favorite little bit:

And that’s the part I had a real problem with, maybe the single biggest problem. There’s this notion that magic fixes everything. It doesn’t. “It’s magic, we don’t have to explain it.” Well, actually, yes, you do. Magic has to have rules. And this is clearly not just a case of one spell making everybody forget he’s Spidey…suddenly you’re bringing back the dead, undoing wounds, erasing records, reinstating web shooters, on and on and on.

What I wanted to do was to make one small change to history, a tiny thing, whose ripples we could control to only touch what editorial wanted to touch, making changes we could explain logically. I worked for weeks to come up with a timeline that would leave every other bit of continuity in place. It was rigorous, and as logical as I could make it. In the end of OMD as published, Harry is alive and he’s always been alive as far as the characters know…so how is that different than he was alive the whole time?

It made no sense to me.

Still doesn’t. It’s sloppy. It violates every rule of writing fiction of the fantastic that I and every other SF/Fantasy writer knows you can’t violate. It’s fantasy 101.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it all up, don’t it.

Here’s a link to a preview Brand Shit Day, the follow up to One Dumb Story, where Peter Parker is an unemployed hipster living at Aunt May’s making out with skeezy chicks in the club. So is he like the gross 40 year old in the club now or is he magically younger? I bet he’s a Skrull.

“Macking”? Did Spidey really say he was “Macking”!? Am I the only one that thinks he sounds like someone’s Dad trying to be cool using the young people’s lingo? My question is this: what about the rest of MU. Since he revealed his identity to the world in Civil War won’t they wonder how he is suddenly unmarried? Has everybody in the MU suddenly forgotten Peter Parker is Spiderman. This is really confusing development.
