Writers Strike Back
Monday, January 14th, 2008 at 4:27 pm by JamieIf I were associated with Air Bud in any way shape or form, I’d probably want to erase that from my IMDB profile ASAP. However, what Aaron Mendelsohn, writer of said film, is proposing reeks of stinking awesome! Not willing to wait until the strike breaks, he’s gathered a posse of fellow WGA members to form Virtual Artists, an online media company:
We are a coalition of top film and television writers and top tech innovators who are dedicated to creating and delivering professionally made content directly to the end user, and who believe in the model of freedom and inclusiveness over the model of control that has been employed by the big media conglomerates for the past 100 years
Virtual Artists will produce TV shows and films for reduced fees while giving writers larger percentages. Sounds like exactly the kind of deals the WGA is looking for.
Virtual Artists is just one of a handful of new ventures helmed by striking writers. 60Frames, Blowtorch Entertainment, and Hollywood Disrupted have all joined the fight. And it’s probably just the tip of the iceberg.
This is great news. Subvert and profit. This is the future of our entertainment. Well, unless they do some dumb shit subscription fee micropayment system. That would certainly backfire big time.
