Mortal Kombat Returns to the Screen

You’d think that the fact that Uwe Boll’s name doesn’t appear in the story that a third Mortal Kombat movie might not reek of rotted suckage. You’d think that, but you’d be wrong. According to director Chris “Mink” Morrison:

[We’re] re-envisioning(if that is a word) of the Mortal Kombat franchise from top to bottom. Todays audience is a savvy involved group so the film must be A plus plus in every area in order to capture the magic of the first film. It is taking the entire concept to the next level across the board in every area visual design, story, cast, FX, photography and most importantly the fighting scenes. The original Mortal Kombat game was born a child of many visual loves by the creators at midway so this latest version borrows heavily from that pioneering spirit and must be thought out and executed at the highest level in order for it succeed in today’s market place. This is no overnight task.

Do what now?

“Capture the magic of the first film?” You know, it must have been magic. Not only did the first film cast a spell on my dumb ass to go ahead and pay for full price opening night tickets on purpose, but it was powerful enough to make me pay for full price opening night tickets to the first one. Dumb, dumb, dumb! Those movies sucked. Not only that, the heat on the franchise has long since cooled. Sure, the games are amusing, but they don’t generate even a quarter of the buzz that they used to. Revamping the series seems weak a pathetic at this point.

However, if the name Tony Jaa is connected to such a thing, I might be persuaded to give this a peek. Also, if that chick in that Chocolate movie is cast as someone, I’m completely sold.

Um… guess my geek-o-meter outweighs my stay-away-from-shit-remakes-o-meter.

Mortal Kombat is one of those games that “could” translate to a good movie, but the script needs to be beefed up in a way that it doesn’t come off like Enter the Dragon vs. Bloodsport vs. Big Trouble in Little China.

Problem is, everyone is more interested in seeing ass kicking and outrageous fatalities than plot and substance.

I often wondered what would happen if they took the time to make that story into something more dramatic rather than action packed, since there could be something interesting behind all the FINISH HIM and CGI Goros thumping their chests.

    Just a thought…

You just know the violence will be dumbed down and next to no blood spraying about, so it can get a rating suitable for the little kiddies that will be bugging their parents for the toys..
