Kotex Wants to Protect Aussie Beavers

Apparently, the Advertising Standards Bureau in Canberra, Australia has received a unusually large number of complaints about the ad. Man, and I thought the U.S. was prudish.

Of all the euphemisms used to describe a woman’s vagina, “beaver” ranks among the least offensive. The ad is certainly cheeky, maybe a tad tasteless. But offensive?

It’s probably unfair for me to judge what people might find offensive, especially coming from the male perspective. Most guys don’t care what people name our genitals. Hell, we name them ourselves. I was under the impression that women use nick names for their fluffy bits just as much as men.

If the genders were reversed and this was an ad for some wang cream and it featured guys walking around with giant boa constrictors wrapped around their pants, would there be the same sort of out cry? Are women calling in to complain? Are the men? And if this played during the Super Bowl, would our FFC begin the decency witch hunt all over again?

Thanks to reader Aegis for the tip.

That seems pretty tame as compared to say the “male enhancement” and viagra commercials they show in primetime here.

What gets me is that Australia is a land known for beaches where clothing is optional, and that’s A-OK, but they will typically ban (legally! nationally!) any video game with nudity or sexual content: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_banned_computer_and_video_games#Australia

yup. There’s like 3 people here who give a shit, and unfortunately they watch every damned medium like porn vultures - waiting to pounce on unwary funnies…

Sad thing is it’s precisely that victorian era view of *genitalia* that prevents people getting the checkups they may need to help stave off diseases/cancers etc… score one for inhibitions!

[…] Jamie over at Angry Zen Master had this article. While I agree with what he say 100%, I’ll only add that at least it wasn’t a shaved beaver. And besides, at least the thing was cute. For us guys, do you know how many times we’re watching TV during dinner and are bombarded with flowery ads for women with that “unclean” feeling? I say this is genius. […]
