Universal Hearts Dark Horse

Grendel Prime

Universal Studios and Dark Horse Comics have teamed up for epic win!

The movie studio has free reign to develop original Dark Horse titles for film. Not included in the deal are titles from established franchises like Star Wars, Buffy, and Conan.

Though there’s no word on which title will be adapted first, Grendel and Fables are is at the top of my list. Grendel would make for an awesome, noir crime fiction flick. And Fables would fit well in the Harry Potter, Narnia, Spiderwick crowd. Usagi Yojimbo could work but only if Stan Sakai was heavily involved and only if it were 2D. A 3D fuzzy samurai would be harder for me to take seriously than a traditionally 2D animated ronin rabbit.

Thanks to reader Wayne W for the tip.

Updated: Thanks to Cowhat Ninja for pointing out that Fables is not Dark Horse. I have no idea what I was thinking.

    Here’s the part I’m not sure of…

Don’t say, Stan Sakai and Matt Wagner own the rights to the characters, effectively making them impossible for Dark Horse to sell?

That’s not to say that we wouldn’t see a Grendel or Usagi film, but I think they’d more likely be films with properties owned by Dark Horse…and honestly, I can’t think of any original, Dark Horse owned properties…maybe X and Ghost? Possibly Big Guy & Rusty The Boy Robot? (although Darrow/Miller may own the rights)

I hate to burst your bubble, but Fables is a DC (Vertigo) title. There’s plenty of other titles in Dark Horse’s repertoire…the Goon, perhaps? Oh! There should TOTALLY be an Escapist movie. But yeah, a Grendel movie would be awesome, too.

I’d love to see a Grendel movie with Orion Assante becoming the first Grendel Khan…

They could definitely do a trilogy from “God and the Devil” with Eppy Thatcher as the Grendel, to Orion as Grendel Khan in “Devil’s Reign,” to Grendel Prime kidnapping Orion’s son Jupiter in “War Child”… :D

Actually, Usagi Yojimbo and Grendal and some others) are owned by their respective creators and just published by Dark Horse Comics. They are not Dark Horse Properties, which are characters that were specifically developed by or for Dark Horse Comics themselves.

Now I’m totally confused. It seems that most of the Dark Horse titles are creator owned in some fashion or another. Maybe this deal gives Universal access to properties that have given Dark Horse permission to develop movies.
