Elephant Paints Self Portrait

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 at 11:04 am by Jami

Best. Elephant. Ever!

Audrey just sent me this video of an elephant painting a self portrait. I had seen elephant paintings before and I always thought they looked like random strokes of color, but there’s no doubt the elephant knows what its doing. Too cute!

A friend of mine worked as a vet tech at a zoo in New York one summer and returned home with an elephant painting. I forget whether it was a portrait or a self-portrait or just random paint, though.

I hope the proceeds from their painting sales go directly to them somehow. Like better living conditions or food or something.

Ya I heard they sell the painting and it goes either towards their care of towards saving their environment. Its really cool to see such a huge, majestical creature do something so delicate. Its also really interesting to see a creatures artistic impression of itself. Truely amazing video!

I read somewhere else that the elephant is trained to paint that particular picture–they aren’t making self-portraits on their own. Which would be super-cool if they were. But I guess this is just a demonstration of technical skill, rather than representative of abstract thinking.
