I just can't see Spielburg doing anime. He's too much of a "happy ending" director. Yes, we have the CGI capability to do anything. Horrible example, but look at what Ewe Boll has been able to do. 10-15+ years ago, things like that or Resident Evil 3 just couldn't be done. So we can do it, the question becomes by who and WHY.

@Steve: ... And Ron Perlman doesn't? You confuse me.

@greg: I have no doubt that Spielberg can make a meaningful, faithful adaptation. I AM concerned about -anyone- getting it from the can to the screen, however, given the attitudes of Hollywood (and everyone else). I suspect getting it into theatres will require some measure of subversion, quite possibly a bona fide stand-alone complex.

... This could be the most 'meta' thing ever.

The Rock or Vin Diesel as Batou?!?

No. Just no. Sorry Jami. Wrong wrong wrong, ad infinitum.

Both those actors certainly have the body and ex-military demeanor required for the role. But I doubt either of them can capture the complexity of the character. This man has seen the skin ripped off innocent children during war and now he lives in a world where he can no longer trust that his will is his own thanks to Goda's Individual 11 virus. Yet he still manages to crack jokes and laugh at Marx Brothers films.

Ron Pearlman might, MIGHT, be able to pull it off, if he doesn't stray into his nihilistic asshole characterizations. Michael Clark Duncan is also a maybe. But I'm thinking something along the lines of Andrew Divoff. He plays (played) Mikhail on Lost and I think he has the physique, face, and the mix of angst and humor needed to play Batou.

I'd really like to see Ron Pearlman's take on Batou. Just keep rolling in the hellboy outfit minus the red.

And just how the hell do they pull this off!?

Transhumanist discourse and unabashed eroticism are like napalm and kryptonite to the American public.

You might get away with tweaking them down a bit, but any serious cuts will leave you with something that just ISN’T the Ghost in the Shell.

Maybe if they sit on it for a few years they’ll have a good shot, but now isn’t the time.

The nice thing about Spielberg doing this is that he has enough pull to actually make the movie pretty true to the original, regardless of what the suits say. Hopefully he'll take care of the themes of the movie and not just give us a watered down action movie.

So long as they got the super pony tail of Batou like in S.A.C I guess I could see either of them doing it.

I would second the vote on the Maggie Q for Motoko. Though I would wonder who would be a good Batou and Tougasa.
