Stan Lee's Ultimo

Stan Lee does manga.

Drawn by Hiroyuki Takei and written by Stan Lee, Ultimo will be chronicled in Viz Media’s Shonen Jump. And that’s pretty much all I got. Oh, the character Dan pictured above is obviously based on Stan Lee. Looks like he’s dressed for sepuku.

UPDATE: Thanks to KamenOtaku, you can now experience the first chapter online. Um… well… meh. Only one chapter and it’s already convoluted as all hell which I suppose in some way is standard fare for manga these days. Color me underwhelmed.

Here’s a link to the first chapter of ULTIMO if anyone wants to check it out. http://www.onemanga.com/ULTIMO/0/
    It’s. . . interesting.

Ah someone beat me to the punch. I can’t say I was too impressed with issue 0. Maybe it’ll get better.

Am I the only who think Stan Lee maybe a little off his rocker? I mean aside from the who wants to be a superhero show, I could totally see him doing something like what happened in the manga in real life. Someone needs to check his basement…

I must say up front that I have not read extensively of what Stan Lee has created in terms of his comic book scripting, so all I really know is the characters that he’s created, and that is undeniably impressive. But everything that I hear from people who were into comics before me, and based on the recent (over the last 15-20 years) Stan Lee, I can’t say that I’m terribly impressed. To me, it seems like his gift is in making characters of amazing potential, but it takes other writers to truly make those characters come alive.

I enjoy Who Wants To Be A Superhero, but I have trouble placing him high in the pantheon of comic writers. Others — Byrne, Clairmont, Miller, Moore, Romita — have done much more to advance story-telling and develop characters and would rate higher in the pantheon for me as they were building on a lot of things that Stan the Man created.

pssst. fyi, that OneManga site is a technically illegal bootlegging / scanlation reposting site.

It’s hard to seperate the concepts from the translations. There were some truly horrendous word choices there.

Well, that was a big steamy pile of suck. I just finished reading the preview chapter, and I want my ten minutes back.
