Ian Holm played Bilbo, and he’s 77 years old. That’s A LOT of de-aging, I would imagine they’ll cast a younger actor. IMDB shows it as already in production with Ian McKellan as Gandalf, so that’s cool. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0903624/ (OK, it says McKellan is rumored, but I can’t imagine them getting anyone else)

If there’s one thing that George Lucas did right in the original trilogy it was casting actors who looked like the older roles from chapters 4 - 6. I’m sure they can cast someone who you could expect would look like Ian when they get older.

For me, yeah, The Hobbit will be very cool. But I’m REALLY looking forward to the bridge movie between Hobbit and Fellowship.

No matter what, it will be better than that 1977 version of The Hobbit.

There’s a level of darkness to all pre-Disney kids stories. The Grimms’ fairy tales were nightmare fuel. I think del Toro understands this.

Smaug as designed by Guillermo will be very intense. I’m predicting Guillermo is going to go into full dark fairytale mode. I wonder if they’ll recast the actor who played Bilbo?

Yeah im with you VonKraut, dont get me wrong i love del toros work but this is the hobbit it was written as a childrens story. I hope he doesnt make it TO dark, though i am wondering what the hell hes gonna do with Smaug cause his creatures always look awesome.
