Revenge of the Return of Summer Sequels

Monday, May 5th, 2008 at 10:55 am by Jami

Been a while since I handed out snap judgments on films that have yet to drop. Reader Kevin Bahrt sent along a slate of upcoming sequels, two original flicks, and a possible remake that are certainly snap judgment worthy. So let’s see if I can keep it to three sentences or less.

Jurassic Park 4

Jurassic Park 4, date TBA.
No.

Transformers 2

Too many puny humans we don’t care about, not enough bots part 2.

Mummy Goes to China

Jet Li will kick major ass, but his performance won’t save this movie. Not as entertaining as Big Bird Goes to China.

The Happening

About as coherent as a 50s and 60s style happening.

You Don't Mess With The Zohan

Shamed to admit it, but I actually laughed at the trailer.

Death Note

American Death Note remake? Well, Speed Racer will grab a ton of cash, but my gut tells me that an American studio will screw the pooch on this one. The Japanese live-action version will play in about 300 theaters on May 20 and 21 through Fathom Events which seems like a better idea than a western remake.

As far as I’ve heard, the Death Note release will be in Japanese with English subtitles. It’s only going to be in theaters for two days (I’m going to be out of the country during that time, booooo). Also, it wouldn’t make any sense for them to use the JAPANESE poster to advertise for the movie. It would be misleading and unfair to do it that way.

But who knows, if this release with english subtitles is a hit, maybe more movies with subtitles will come to domestic theatres?

Well, they might have also dubbed it. That’d be the expected thing to do.

I can think of several ways that a transformers sequel could be cool.

    1) prequel- the movie covers the war on cybertron before any puny humans get involved and just a little bit of plot with tons of battles with megs and prime annihilating everything in their paths.

    2) sequel-due to the increasing terrorist activity of the predacons prime has allowed the formation of a human support force piloting mechs based on the transfomers designs. These people are support personal that stay and guard the base.

How the hell does Death Note get a freaken American remake while some damn fine OVAs slip through the cracks. I am sick and tired of lame mainstream anime making it big enough to get remakes.

Paprika should have had a bigger Release than what it did. Tekonconcreate should have been in theaters.
Ghost in the shell: Solid State Society should have been released in theaters and actually holds more relevance than some emo kid who comes across a book that he can kill people with.

And Cashern should have had a theater release in North America, dubbed or subbed. It was a well done live action movie. I don’t want an American live action DBZ, and less do I want to know there’s a live action Death note.

    Hollywood you make me mad!!!
