Kung Fu Panda Full of Awesomeness and Acttractiveness

Po from Kung Fu Panda

Audrey and I caught Kung Fu Panda opening night and just fell in love with the movie! It’s easily one of our absolute favorites of the summer thus far. Martial arts movie fans will appreciate the wonderfully choreographed action sequences and the many nods to Kung Fu classics. You can tell the writers did their homework. The voice actors have a lot of fun with their characters and it comes through in every bit of dialog. Certainly a great summer movie that everyone can enjoy, Kung Fu nerd or not.

A few complaints before the gushing continues. I realize that I’m throwing my full support behind a movie that by and large cast non Asians to portray Chinese animals. Lucy Liu and Jackie Chan are the only Chinese voice actors and neither has a large portion of dialog. We were sorely disappointed that Jackie had about five lines throughout the entire film. Also, there’s a dramatic tone shift between the penultimate and final confrontations. There’s no way the final fight between Po and Tai Lung could have sustained the dark drama of the fight between Shifu and Tai Lung for a kid’s movie. And it probably would have rung a bit false. But it’s a jarring enough shift that it almost jumped me out. Fortunately, it’s handled well enough to suck me back in.

The opening and end credit sequences are done in traditional 2D animation and are absolutely stunning, especially the opening. Why Dreamworks hasn’t done a full 2D feature yet is beyond me (Forgot Prince of Egypt. Thanks Devin). I will purchase the DVD as soon as possible just to play that sequence over and over. It’s that fucking good! From superb 2D we jump into gorgeous 3D. Dreamworks is really kicking their game up. The environments are so realistic and detailed and the characters move so fluidly it’s easy to get lost in the world and forget you’re watching a movie made of ones and zeros. Very pretty ones and zeros.

Other highlights include old master Oogway’s old man lips and subtle twitchy hands, Tai Lung’s escape (one of the craziest action sequences filmed ever!), Po’s training sequences with master Shifu, and the Furious Five paper craft on Po’s windowsill. The story is familiar and somewhat predictable, but nonetheless thoroughly enjoyable. So highly recommended!

We had so much fun in the theater. I highly recommend everyone check out the awesomeness of Kung Fu Panda as soon as possible! A great summer movie that must be seen on the big screen!

UPDATE: Wayne reminded me. Be sure to stay through the end credits for a short additional scene. Very cute.

Agreed completely. Jamie and I checked it out last night, and the flick was top to bottom a blast. I typically shy away from Dreamworks, but the team behind this movie knocked it out of the part.

I will say though that we were both disappointed that after seeing the amazing 2D opening and credits that they didn’t choose to do the entire movie in that style. What a bold choice that would’ve been.

DVD purchase for sure. Possible bummer though: A Kung Fu Panda series is due on Nickelodeon soon…

Oh noes! Audrey and I were just talking about how a sequel would just suck horribly. A tele series is no good. Unless… if they do it 2d like the opening credits! Still a little disappointing.

See, now I’m a little torn.

I’m not a fan of Jack Black, and never really been a fan of (what looks to be) ‘ha, the hero wins because he’s fat’ movies. >.>

Please tell me he actually fights in the movie. Maybe I’ll rent it, then.

Because, dammit, it looks gorgeous. @.@

He does fight after a fairly clever training sequence (an almost Jackie Chan style training sequence if you will). I will say that there is a little fatjutsu. But he does manage to develop his own unique style which is quite enjoyable.

Dreamworks DID do a 2D animated feature, Prince of Egypt…

anywho, I’ve seen mixed reviews for Kung Fu Panda, but it looks awesome so I’ll probably check it out sometime this week! :D

DOH! I totally forgot about that.

The animation in the intro is a billion times more exciting than Prince of Egypt IMHO. And I highly HIGHLY recommend seeing this on the big screen.

Not sure if this fill the bill too, but “The Road to El Dorado” was another 2d pic by Dreamworks. Not sure if I’d say it was epic or anything, but I do remember loving the little adult comments they tossed in that a kid probably would never pick up on. :)

Oh! And Spirit - forgot that one too. :)

    I… THINK that’s all they’ve done 2d-wise.
Don’t quote me on that though.

I just wish the Furious Five had more dialog. It’s definitely a great film though.

All I have to add is, “Ska-doosh”

My wife and I saw two movies Sunday, this and Stephen Chow’s CJ7. Keep an eye out for CJ7 in your area, it’s showing in a little art house-ish theater here.

Loved KFP, the training montage was fantastic and I almost died with the acupuncture scene as I have two friends who are naturopaths and had an acupuncture treatment when I was in Phoenix a few years ago.

One word of warning: there is an additional animated scene, but it’s at the VERY end of the credits….

Oh yeah! I forgot to say that in my review. I ended up staying through the credits because they were so gorgeous that I forgot they were credits!

All I can say is…dumplings. Never has a training sequence been so appetizing.

Thank you so much for promoting this. Based on your recommendation, I caught it last night, and it was awesome. I could look at hours of just the 2D style. The animation was spot-on, and I loved the interpretations of the different animal styles.

Well I just wanted to say, they weren’t Paper Craft on the window, they were wooden action figures. :P
