George Carlin Leaves Us Seven Words of Awesome

Monday, June 23rd, 2008 at 8:35 am by Jami

The world became less funny Sunday. George Carlin died of heart failure at 5:55pm in Santa Monica, CA. He was 71.

Shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, tits are seven words that have clearly informed my vocabulary. But beyond that, Carlin always made me think. He pointed out the everyday absurdities we somehow accepted as truths and challenged us to think more critically. Seems to me that his brand of intellectual humor paved the way for John Stewart, Lewis Black, Stephen Colbert, and other topical comics. Carlin will be sorely missed.

So let’s celebrate his awesome might! Here is the famed seven words routine. Enjoy. And try a few at work today. If anyone gives you shit, just tell that ignorant motherfucker you’re celebrating George Carlin’s life.

And another one just for good measure.

Thanks to Mikey D for the word.

I’m sure he’s sitting up on Joe Pesci’s roof laughing his ass off at the rest of us.

I think that Mitch Hedberg may have been the most direct descendant of Carlin’s style of taking every day events and turning them in such a way that they looked absolutely ridiculous. Louis Black is clearly the new purveyor of pure unbridled outrage at the world, with Jon Stewart being the more sedate version of Black.

Lewis Black is my most favorite comedian. At least for the past few years. His level of unadulterated rage is truly awe inspiring.

oh man, and Stan Winston died just last weekend. I understand that the older a person is the more likely it is they are gonna pass on, but seriously two of my biggest childhood/young adulthood heroes are gone in less than two weeks. this sucks hard.

I’m gonna get lynched for this, but I saw Carlin live in Vegas a few years ago…and he just sucked ass. The only good set in the whole show was the one about condensing the seven commandments…and I still can’t remember a word of it.

I loved him in Dogma and Jersey Girl, so I thought it would be funny to see him in person.

Thank god the warm up guy was funny, otherwise I would have been depressed (’course the tickets were free, so I guess I shouldn’t complain). Plus the place was hotter than hell and smelled like ass…Maybe Carlin was just angry he was in the dump. >_>

I’ve seen a few sets today (mostly him ranting about religion) and they gave me a chuckle…but as far as comedy goes I still like Lewis Black for pure anger and crazy political rants.

Maybe Carlin just wasn’t my cup of tea, but he seemed more rude and depressed than angry and funny. Too bad he’s gone though.

I was watching CNN and Sienfield (sp?) said he was sad that Carlin was best remembered for his ’seven words’ set…but I thought it captured his personality rather well.

One thing that I really liked about Carlin was he had a ‘dry’ delivery. That’s not to say that he couldn’t get impassioned about what he was saying, but he wasn’t like Sienfeld or Letterman or any number of newer comics who laughs at thier own jokes. I will decide what I think is funny, thank you very much. I am not amused that you think your own material is funny.

But George, we’ll miss ya. Definitely bogus.
