Soulja Boy Responds

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 at 8:21 am by Jami

“We the same, nigga!”

Thanks to AZM ally Mike Dent for digging this up.

He must get a quarter for every “nigga” he says. Soulja Boy makes some good points. Like the fact that Ice T doesn’t need his respect. Seems like he’s hit that Wikipedia entry pretty hard for most of his counter dis material. Who cares the Ice T was born on the East Coast? He’s still done more for Hip Hop than Soulja Boy ever will. Lots of battles and challenges going on these days, but I’d seriously love to see this battle take place.

SB has a few minor points - hip-hop has changed. Its all about making money - not struggling to get money. T is pissed because SB’s music does absolutely nothing to relate to today’s youth.

That is the problem. He’s a prime example of shit talent scooped up by big money to create something marketable. Thats not working hard - thats getting lucky.

    Totally agreed.

Also, I think some blame has to be put on the fucktard who recorded his shit and threw it up on the radio. Without the airtime, Soulja Boy would be nobody.

Don’t forget all the people who buy his music, because without them it wouldn’t matter who scouted/recorded/produced/distributed his music. I’m no fan of SB, but blaming him for people liking his crap seems wrong to me.

SB shoots himself in the foot by sounding like an ignorant kid for the entire first half of the video, though. Why would Ice T bother sitting through the disses? If SB really thinks that what he says in the second half of the video is important and serious, he should have put it first.

Ice T is coming from hip-hop as art, and Soulja Boy is coming from hip-hop as bread. I kind of wonder if there’s a point to the conversation between them - they’re not even on the same page.

I’ve never heard Soulja Boy, but if he’s really 17 I’m not expecting masterpieces for sure. I’m not trying to defend him, but I do think Ice T could be going after older people who don’t have the excuse of youth to be releasing shitty music.

Ice T also has the opportunity to turn this into an opportunity for some sage advice. I kind of wonder if he’ll take it.

Wooden cars? No cameras in 1958? I think Soulja Boy should have stayed in school. Either that or he needs to read a few more Wikipedia entries to learn a bit of history.

What truly fascinates me about this whole pissing match is all the response videos up on YouTube from people that really have nothing to do with the beef. There are at least 50 guys using the Ice T vs. Soulja Boy drama to try to get people to listen to their shite music by talking about one of the videos for 30 seconds and then playing their own music for the next 4-5 minutes. With the exception of very few artists, it seems that good hip-hop has been dead since Biggie and 2Pac died. Soulja Boy just put a nail in it’s coffin. It’s become more about who can splice together a bunch of songs into a beat people will dance to, rather than spend 5 minutes writing good lyrics.

Am I the only one that wishes both Ice T (on his response video) and Soulja Boy spent a little bit of time with iMovie or Windows Movie Maker to actually edit their shit down to one or two cohesive points rather than babble nonsensically for half the video with a couple of horrible editing cuts worked in (Ice T=2; Soulja Boy=too many to count)?

Lil Wayne’s Carter III sold a million in its first week, the first album to do that since 50’s The Massacre. Nas, T.I., and David Banner have albums coming out this year. Hip hop will be just fine in my opinion.
