The Eva That Laid Golden Eggs
Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 at 9:24 am by JamiAZM regular and giant robot anime expert Kevin Bahrt sent over two trailers for the new Rebuild of Gainax’s golden egg generator, Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Oooh, green glowies! Eva-06 looks pretty badass and new. And those Adams or Lilin+1 or whatever they are, too cute.
There’s a lesson to be learned for all future anime producers. If your show gets really popular, throw out some crazy, drug induced, experimental, incomprehensible last two episodes and you can milk that teat for years to come. Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (I am here with you, though you’re far away, I am here to stay… sorry) was released last September and was fairly successful from what I understand. Evangelion: 2.0 Division should come out sometime this year. Evangelion: 3.0 and Evangelion: Final will be shown together. And I suspect ten years after Final, we’ll get Evangelion: The Search For More Moeny!
I can’t think of another series that has been remixed as many times as Eva. Well, I guess Gundam has had way more iterations. But at least they’re sequels are alternate timelines, not straight remixes of the exact same story over and over again. The new Zeta movies are the closest Gundam has ever come to just jacking old footage and sexing it up with a few new animated sequences.
As an artist, I can understand going back to tweak old work. Clearly, the market will bear countless Eva remixes. Gainax has grown such a powerful brand that fans eat up any new Eva content even if it’s just the same stuff with some green glowies added. And I suppose you need money to fund your other projects that might not be as well received. Still, seems like a bit of a cop out on a Hollywood scale. And you know those last two movies will make just as much sense as the ending of any Eva series. More comprehensible my ass.
