Ozymandias With Authentic Nipple Action

I wasn’t too impressed with Ozymandias’s costume when the photos were released and it seems I’m not alone. Although my biggest problem was the lack of gold, most people point to Ozy’s Bat nipple action as a major flaw. AZM regular Tyler Anderson dug up Zack Snyder’s response to the criticism:

Do you think that I don’t…would that be an accident? If you don’t acknowledge sort of the…where comic book movies are right now. If you can’t like, in the same way that ‘Watchmen’ [graphic novel] referenced and took apart the comic book genre and comic book heroes. You have to make some reference to those same decisions that were made, in cinema.

If you think that fact that Ozy’s costume has nipples is a mistake, or that we don’t understand the design…to me that’s just crazy. You just need to pay more attention.

Yes yes, clearly we dislike the costume because we’re not paying attention. Huh?

I don’t understand the point about where comic book movies are right now. Bat nipples are so last decade. The new Bats has no nipples, there were no X nipples, no Daredevil nipples, and Hell Boy only has nipples because he’s manly and shirtless. Snyder’s right. I don’t get it.

    Sounds like he’s trying to claim that the use of nipples on Ozy’s costume is a sort of critical commentary on the historical use of nipples on costumes in the movies. But of course, the only time it’s ever been done was Batman, and everyone agreed it was a bad idea. So I think he’s mostly talking out his ass.

    I really think Snyder is going to play up how much Ozymandias has sold out publicly. How he has turned himself into a brand name and living toy commercial.

    Also, the photo of ozymandias that Snyder released is really desaturated. The actual costume is much more purple and gold. You’re thinking, what gold? I’ve seen a set pic, and Ozy looks far more like his comic counterpart.

    I agree with Greg in part, I think that as comicdom was to the Watchmen graphic novel, comic book movies are to the Watchmen movie. Watchmen served as both a story in its own right but also a commentary on the status of comic book storytelling at the time.

    However, Jam and Greg, I think the only reason that there were no X nips, no Daredevil nips is BECAUSE of the fact that it was such a faux pas in comic movie history, and I think Snyder is touching on that with Ozymandias’s costume, especially since Watchmen the movie is supposed to take place in the 80s like the graphic novel. They’re taking us back in time to a day when the possibility of latex nipples might have been actually considered cool on a superhero’s costume, especially for as arrogant a character as Ozymandias.
