Frank Miller’s Spirit = Softcore Porn

Uh… wtf?

Sometimes I wonder if Frank Miller just sits back and laughs his ass off at the rest of us. His Spirit is a woman crazy psycho with a major Oedipus Complex. “Oh, the city is my mother and I totally want to bang her and stuff!” Seriously, what the fuck?

I’m not liking what I’m seeing. The visual style is like Sin City with some color thrown in. I guess I don’t mind it visually, but the tone of these previews is so dark, you could easily mistake this for a Sin City sequel. Sure, noir crime fiction can be dark. But this is skewing a little extreme.

Bully for Frank for getting to direct and make films and all, but the more I see, the more I’m inclined to sit The Spirit out.

I think Miller’s interpretation of Eisner’s Spirit is supposed to be way edgier to suit our current time period. When Eisner created the Spirit in the 40s, it was super-edgy for that time period and was one of the first mainstream adult-focused comics in print.

I have a feeling he’s going to be bang on with this one - its supposed to be super campy, pulp style, and overt in its sexuality. The old comics are tame by our standards, so Miller spiced them up as if they were written nowadays - I think it makes total sense.

The cinematography will probably be different, much like 300 is different from Sin City. They just happened to choose the darkest scenes in the trailer for effect.

Perhaps hes doing only what is expected of him. I could see hollywood producers saying “do it like sin city” or “do it like 300.” because thats what THEY know has worked in the past. this sounds like nothing more than holly wood studios churning out carbon copy lame ass movies, and attaching big names to it. Only this time.. its a director with “comic cred.”

Also.. Miller is a well known misogynist. The only strong women in his stories are whores. And even then, they are mostly iconoclass stereotypes (high class hooker, BDSM Ninja, etc…)

Maybe I’m crazy, but I think that this actually looks fairly good. Despite not having read the comics, or not being at all familiar with them, I can still appreciate Drezz’s analysis and I agree with it. Over the top isn’t always a bad thing, and only time will tell if this movie is a success.

Samuel L. Jackson is in it, so thats a plus.

The old Spirit of the comic books has a lot of weird mental problems, including hallucinations that lure him into being a hero when he doesn’t want to be. Some of the comics centered around his strange obsession with “bad” girls.

The new one seems to take that a step farther, and I think it is trying hard to capture the old soul of the comic with a new feel. Frank Miller has always pushed the genre of any old comic he re-writes - I mean, look at the Dark Knight Returns and such. His angle is to modernize the old tale and see how far he can take it.
