When Spartans Attack

Angry Zen Minion Epoch9 writes in to report that the Halo movie is back on! Sorta.

The Halo movie that involved Peter Jackson, Weta, FOX, and Universal is no more. Dead, dead as a doornail. Dead as a grunt with a plazma sword through his scrawny little head. Dead as all the Arbiters that have fallen before you. Dead as the… you get the picture.

But like a Flood infected corpse, the Halo movie rises anew. Apparently, screenwriter Stuart Beattie has decided to take matters into his own hands and has written a spec script based on the novel Halo: Fall of Reach. My brother always told me that if I was going to read a Halo novel, it should be that one. Fall of Reach serves as sort of a prequel to the first game and explains the origins of the Spartan project and Master Chief.

Beattie is shopping out his script complete with concept art by Kasra Farahani (Latino Review has a higher res version of the above image) and has a presentation all set and ready for Microsoft.

Crossing fingers and hoping this comes to light and doesn’t fall to the game movie curse.

Honestly Alex Garland isn’t a bad screenwriter… so the script wasn’t the problem. The problem was the powers-that-be at the studios didn’t want to pony up the money for what would be a big-budget sci-fi blockbuster.

There’s gotta be something going on with that too that I don’t understand. I don’t know who wouldn’t want to develop a mega-franchise based on a game with a huge following, the latest iteration of which made a third of a billion dollars… on its first day of sale. Something’s fishy about that…

I’d say bring Weta back into the fold. Hell they’ve already made a full working, driveable Warthog to scale… Might as well use it! :D

Pants aren’t quite crunchy yet. Close… but not crunchy.

From what I understand, Microsoft wanted more control than FOX and Universal were willing to give up. So that incarnation of the movie was killed. This sounds like they’re starting over from scratch. Thing is, I’m sure M$ has enough money to fund the thing outright. Dunno though.

But will they want to is the question. Microsoft isn’t exactly known for being generous with its money.

But could you imagine if they pulled a Marvel and formed an independent studio for their creative properties? Maybe an internally produced Gears of War movie to follow if the Halo did well? :D

Okay now the pants are getting crunchier…
