Star Trek 2009 Posters

The latest round of Star Trek 2009 posters are less recognizable than the first. I had no problem recognizing Spock, Kirk, Ohura, and random evil Romulan guy. Thankfully, the interwebs tell all. That’s John Cho as Sulu, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Karl Urban as McCoy, and Anton Yelchin as Chekov. Urban’s expression reads “Get that fucking camera out of my face” which is actually spot on for McCoy. Simon Pegg as Scotty just makes me laugh. I would love to see how he plays it. I won’t complain about a Korean cast as a Japanese because I’m happy to see John Cho get more work. And I have no idea who Anton Yelchin is.

I think you either get really excited about cast photos or don’t care. I’m kind of in the don’t care crowd, at least for this movie. Sure, the posters look pretty and I like the retro feel of them. But I think I’ll have to see some trailers and a little more about the story before I make up my mind.

What do you Trekkies out there think? And please, let’s not get into the whole Trekkie vs. Trekker thing.

I also like John Cho. You know ever since I first saw him in American Pie, I’ve thought he looked and sounded like Mat. Is it just me?

I had the same initial reaction that you did to Cho being cast as the (quite Japanese) Sulu, until I found the following (via the wikipedia entry… so hopefully true):

“Abrams was concerned about casting a Korean-American as a Japanese-Filipino character, but George Takei explained to the director Sulu was meant to represent all of Asia on the Enterprise, so Abrams went ahead with Cho. Cho acknowledged being an Asian-American, “there are certain acting roles that you are never going to get, and one of them is playing a cowboy. [Playing Sulu] is a realization of that dream — going into space.” He cited the masculinity of the character as being important to him, and spent two weeks fight training”

Sounds like it was Abrams who was considering being more ethnically sensitive; then Takei was the one who OK’d the casting choice. The reasoning behind Sulu being generically Asian seems sound, not to mention I’m pretty sure Cho can do the part justice, so I’m actually looking forward to this more, having this disclosed.

That’s an excellent point. And if Takei gave his blessing, who am I to argue.

Is it just me, or does Simon Pegg in this particular picture remind anyone of Sam Neill? I did a double take and SWORE that was him from Red October…

I am very excited to see some human drama coming from Karl Urban. LotR and CoR were a bit too “Epic” to get a real person feel off of them.

Haha no I also saw “Charlie Bartlett” and I was actually really impressed by his work in it, the film itself was fine but he was great especially in the audition scene. I just hope the accent doesnt screw him up.
