Downey Jr. Gets all NWA on Us and Says, “FUCK DC COMICS!”

NWA

I read this quote from Robert Downey, Jr.:

My whole thing is that that I saw The Dark Knight. I feel like I’m dumb because I feel like I don’t get how many things that are so smart. It’s like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and script writing and I’m like, “That’s not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.” I loved The Prestige but didn’t understand The Dark Knight. Didn’t get it, still can’t tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy. I’m like, “I get it. This is so high brow and so fucking smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.” You know what? Fuck DC comics. That’s all I have to say and that’s where I’m really coming from.

And this song just jumped into my brain meats:

That’s right! I just compared Robert Downey, Jr. to the world’s most dangerous group! When N.W.A. released “Fuck Tha Police” they made permanent enemies of police departments around the country. Similarly, Downey, Jr.’s “Fuck DC Comics” statement may have earned him the enmity of most comic book geeks.

You know what, though, I ain’t mad at Downey, Jr. Although I think he’s screwed himself out of working with Warner Brothers on pretty much anything, I totally respect him for speaking his mind. And honestly, lately, DC Comics just haven’t been holding up. How many Crisis events can one universe go through? Ugh. My love for Dark Knight is well documented, but I can see where he’s coming from. I don’t agree. But I can see it.

“Fuck Tha Police” helped propel N.W.A.’s Straight Out of Compton record to double platinum. I think when the dust settles, Downey, Jr. will continue to make millions as Tony Stark and eventually other comic based characters. Just nothing from DC.

I think Downey is just mad cause he didn’t get to play Bruce Wayne and be 2 billionaire playboys in superhero movies.

    Very possible….hmmm…

No, seriuously…I’ve always loved Marvel over DC. DC’s heroes all seem to be acting like people…not people being heroes. Does that make sense?

Marvel’s guys just seem more real and likable.

Like Batman…Bruce Wayne is just a charactered version of what he perceives to be the wasteful, slovenly higher class. I’m just less fond of that kind of hero.

But I friggin LOVED Dark Knight…but I totally see where he’s coming from.

DC and marvel fans have by and large always been of two camps; seems only fair that the actors they cast feel the same way.

On some levels all actors are the verbal equivalent of tracers; what separates the greats from the Anakin tends to be those bits of individuality brought to the table.

Tony is the anti Bruce in every way. Sure both are billionaire playboys, but one of them is doing it as a cover and the other is simply a drunk. The later is more accessible to many of us, and as Downey has some experience being that guy, it makes a whole lot of sense that a movie about someone parading around with his personal flaws as a cover might not be so… palatable to Downey.

I like the idea of a man who is willing to be vilified to be a hero… but I also like the idea of a guy who builds a hero because he’s so flawed he wants to create meaning in his wasteful life.

As long as the movies they make are good, I don’t need Downey to get it.

I love Downey jr, but I must say.. you really do have to be an idiot to not get what happened in TDK. It wasn’t fucking rocket science, and it’s a little hard to believe that Downey Jr wouldn’t understand what happened. Maybe I just don’t know him enough.

Umm wasn’t the plot explained by Alfred “some men just want to see the world burn”? I will admit that the things the joker did was hard to follow and understand but most thing a genius dose are.The ending bat man had to be the bad guy cause what happen to Harvey Dent. They cover it up like two face never happen and Harvey death was cause by joker threat of killing people every day if the batman don’t unmask and needed the public to blame him so that Gotham city wouldn’t lose hope.So were my collage degree?

well that how i saw the ending.other might have seen it differently but every one should have drawn there own conclusion base on what they saw and not need it spell out to them.

I see what he’s saying. I don’t necessarily agree with it. Its almost like he’s saying “Comic-book movies shouldn’t be so highbrow..” I may be mistaken, but thats what it seems like.

If comic books as a medium for intellectual writing cannot be taken seriously by even the actors who portray them; its a long slow road before they are considered as such, instead of pop culture sensationalism.

Although what the term means to different people…
Im not a huge fan of DC’s comics, superman - blegh, Justice League - blegh…all..bland. The animated versions are nice though. Marvel’s is much more fantastical, which appealed to the kid in me, the heroes are all very distinct, and have unique personalities to boot, which most of DC’s lineup lacks.

HOWEVER. DC’s “vertigo” line of mature comics far exceeds marvel’s “max” line, in terms of quality and design. It seems the kiddy preternations have applied to the mature comics, which just seem to add more gore and sex to the comic, while the vertigo line has…well; Watchmen, Sandman, Preacher..etc. Thats my taste, though apparently garth ennis did a widely appreciate take on Punisher for Max.

it’s funny that Robert Downey Jr. said the Dark Knight is too sophisticated when he himself tends to sound so sophisticated
