Dawn of AWESOME!

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008 at 11:59 am by Jami

Angry Zen Minion Kensei sent along this insane trailer for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II. Chainsaw sword FTW! I’m a sucker for robots, even if it looks like a Macross Destroid knockoff. And that freaking flying Cthulu death demon at the end is freaking amazing! Looks like I’ll have to add another RTS to my gaming rotation.

The Robot is a Dreadnought, the body of an all-but-dead Space Marine pressed into service again. And the monster is a Lictor, sort of the stealthy advance guard for the Tyranids. Think Starcraft’s Zerg and you’ll have the idea, since that’s pretttty much where Blizzard pulled it from.
    Yay for WH40K.

Why is it that marine armor, which can generally be measured in inches, seems to do exactly squat? If it were more of a power suit like Master Chief’s I could understand but I never really see them do anything that implies a few hydraulics behind their muscles. If they aren’t power suits but merely armor/environment suits why not go with a slimmer design like that of the storm trooper? They seem to provide the same level of protection.

Methinks it’s a cinematic thing. In DoW1 I could generally take down a couple squads of Eldar and lose ONE marine, if I was unlucky. But that makes for a boring intro.

Actually Space Marines in 40k aren’t wearing power armor like the Master Chief’s, it’s just super thick armor on an equally massive frame after all the genetic splicing they start going through at like age twelve. Terminators though wear full power armor which does a lot more, namely allow them to carry heavy bolters one handed. Also munitions in 40k tend to be described as minature missiles, or bolters.

All I can say is welcome to the Warhammer 40k universe. Isn’t it swell? I’ve been a big fan of the WH40K for a number of years, can’t wait to play this. If I ever have time between work and school, that is.

‘Kay, makes sense. Same reason stormtroopers armor seems to do squat in the movies. Ah the magic that is plot/cinematics.

And I meant the question for space marines in general. I see marines in Starcraft and the like wearing this massive armor and still being treated like cannon fodder but still not able to, you know, pick up a small vehicle or anything.

Now for the big question. Is a chainsaw sword better than a lightsaber?

What if you combined the two, stuck a small chain between them, and created chain-light-saber-chucks? Would Bruce Campbell be the only with enough awesome points to wield such epic weapons?

    @ Thomas C

Yeah it kicks ass alright. I have a Black Templar and Witch Hunter (Sisters of Batllet) Army gathering dust that I have considered getting out and updating. But the miniatures are so expensive these days.

There are humans that wear stormtrooper-like armor, but it does very little in the way of stopping the firepower of the horribly powerful factions the Empire faces - they are called the Imperial Guard. Mostly, the Marines consider the IG cannon-fodder for their troops during skirmishes that involve Imperial colonies.

Technology is limited in the fact that most of the Empire no longer has any clue how to make more advanced tech (they barely understand the tech they have and they have techpriests who treat tech like it’s a religion), so the Marine’s armor is basically the same armor they’ve used for thousands of years with a few improvements. Doesn’t help that the alien and chaos races they encounter have weapons that can devestate unprepared Marine squads.

Again, Marine armor is more of a frame to carry heavy weapons and withstand the brutal forces of their opponents. Someone mentioned Terminators, which are the only unit that can weild some of the more devestating force weapons and guns because they are truly just giant walking frames that house a genetically enhanced human grown to use the armor.

And Dreadnaughts are just giant lifesupport coffins that house old/seriously injured Marines and can do wickedly horrible things to the enemy. Such as crush several smaller opponents in one claw, use a flamer to torch entire units, and fire massive bolters that drop Eldar walkers and punch holes in tanks.

Damnit, another game I’m not going to be able to play. Curse you lack of money!

Aside from the dramatic aspect, there’s a game based reason the fight ran like this as well.

The sniper round bounced off the armour like it should and the rest were Howling Banshees and a Warp Spider. The former wield blades that slice through steel with ease the latter shoot monofilament webs that can work their way through chinks easily enough.

We’re talking basic marines vs eldar specialist troops.

If this were the board game those three Banshees would have gone through those six marines in no time flat (possibly all down on the charge, maybe one round of combat extra). The Farseer and ‘Spider wouldn’t even be needed.

Mmmmm… nah. Vortigar, Banshees ain’t all THAT. Shit, during that nice long charge they made, they’d get mowed down nicely, or at least have their numbers reduced. Remember, unlike marines, Banshee armour is f**k-all against anything bigger than a spitwad. And marines do have a high Weapons skill and toughness, whereas the Banshees are eggshells armed with hammers. Even basic marines are pretty tough customers against most infantry. Let alone with a Dread in support (even if he got there late in the trailer).

But for the game… oh, yes, finally get some Tyranids to play with :) Might make me quit painting figures for a few minutes!

Like you said, Marines are tough against most infantry but Banshee’s are tailor made to cut down marines. I was just saying the movie is quite alright if you run it past on board game rules, the third paragraph was indeed overdoing it there, my bad.

    Still: “Eggshells and hammers”?

4+ saves and power weapons you mean. And the Marines can’t attack back in the first round of combat due to the Banshee Shriek. If (like in the movie) 2 Banshees reach hand to hand combat with 5 Marines, there’s a good possibility three Marines go down before they get to counterattack (like in the movie). It’d take them 2 rounds to get there though, not 1.

I was wondering if this post was going to boil down to a debate about the table-top game that only the fan-boys who play it would know. Then again, who am I to judge.
*Giggles in delight over the thought of playing tyranids*
