Iron Man Sequels and Avengers Confirmed

Thursday, October 30th, 2008 at 8:53 am by Jami

Lego Iron Man
Lego Shellhead from Arvo

AZM Ally Greg writes in to confirm that we have official word that Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3 and The Avengers are go. John Favreau will return to direct the Iron sequels and executive produce The Avengers with Robert Downey Jr. signed on to reprise his role as Tony Stark. Terrance Howard is officially out (boo). Don Cheadle is officially in as Jim Rhodes (glimmer of hope?).

We also have a tentative lineup for the Avengers. We’ll see Shellhead, Captain America, Hulk, Wasp, Giant Man, Hawkeye, and Thor assemble for great ass kickings. Besides Iron Man, none of the other Avengers have been cast. According to AZM Ally Kensei Dave, Daniel Craig was approached to wield Mjolnir. Interesting choice. I think he’d make a great Donald Blake and he has a decent enough build that I think he’d pull off a pretty decent God of Thunder (and Rock and Roll!). Sadly, we’ll never know. Craig declined. And though Ed Norton played a fairly decent Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk, his future as big green is questionable. Apparently there was some dispute with Marvel over the final cut of the movie so we might get a new Bruce.

Iron Man 2 is slated for a 2010 release with The Avengers to quickly follow in 2011. I’m a little mixed here. Terrance Howard is getting shafted. Boo! And Ed Norton really should be brought back. Very curious to see who gets tapped to play Steve Rogers. A good Steve makes The Avengers all worth it. A meh Steve makes for a meh team. We’ll see. Please don’t fuck it up, Marvel.

Is it wrong that i think Dennis Quaid should play Cap? I know he’s a bit older than the young hipsters usually caste… But like like Norton and Downey, he neither looks his age, nor lacks the chops to deliver the goods.

    Thoughts?

I really hope they go with the Ultimates version of Thor. Viking lunatic Jesus FTW!

I have to agree with Mungo. So far, other than Deadpool, I tend to like the Ultimate characters better. They just seem more entertaining. Well assuming the two Avenger’s animated movies were pretty close to the Ultimate universe. I still like the original insane Deadpool better than than the lame one in the Ultimate universe.

I think it’s gonna take a bloody miracle to make this film well. And Nortan should totally come back as Banner, I don’t know who would be a good Cap though.

My buddy and I were talking about this and we thought Adam Baldwin (Firefly, Chuck) could pull off a decent Cap. He’s got the build and he did the voice of Superman for Doomsday.

Thor in my opinion’s harder, since he has to literally have to build of a norse god. They should probably find a nameless Norweigan actor for the role.

    Agree or disagree?

I’m always interested in unknowns. I think that’s the way to go for Thor.

I hope they make Thor a redhead like he was supposed to be. It gets annoying after a while of seeing nothing but blonds every where. Well besides the redheaded girls, but it’s always better to see girls than boys. And Adam Baldwin would probably make a good Cap.

Captain Jack from Torchwood has been approached for Captain America, but I’m not sure how far the talks went.

And as far as Thor, Kenneth Branaugh is supposed to direct but I’m not sure if he’s starring in it also.
