Capoeira Video Game Underwhelms

Friday, November 7th, 2008 at 10:21 am by Jami

So there’s this Capoeira game coming out in February 2009 and I feel I should be really excited. But after looking at this gameplay footage, I feel somewhat underwhelmed. I guess playing a game is not as fun as actually doing Capoeira. If I didn’t find rock climbing, I would have enrolled in Capoeira classes. Maybe I’ll still do it sometime. Who knows.

Anyway, this thing is coming out for PSP, PS2, DS, Wii, and PC which is why I think it looks kind of bleh. I mean, you should want to get off your ass and do the moves after seeing Capoeira! You know, that feeling you get after watching Chairman Dacascos in Only the Strong!

I wouldn’t be so quick to judge the game - it looks like two button mashers were playing. I’m sure the engine supports some pretty looking choreography if you get the game into the hands of someone who knows how to do the moves.

All the video showed were two people trying to paw at one another and there were no combo moves or anything. I’m sure there will e a show off reel that will show the fancy moves and such - I remember when Tekken 3 had that Capoeira fighter, and I thought they did a good job of capturing the style, seeing as he was frustratingly difficult to hit when he was flipping about, as it should be.

I will say that it looks like they’ve got some pretty authentic moves. And the music is quite good. But it just left me wanting. Maybe I’ll be more hyped as we get more gameplay footage.

I thin they should combine this game with a setup like DDR - left food, left hand right foot right hand, stall, etc - it would be 100% better than Wii fit!

It will all depend on the interface, I think. I will probably pick this one up as I am still in the previous generation on console (PS2).

If it’s only as deep as Tekken (which is still good) then it may be a solid, if definitely thematic fighter. Hopefully it’s deeper still, which would make it a new generation (and sub-genre’s) Bushido Blade.

That game looked choppy slow and over all unimpressive. I’d like to see it beefed up and with a little more thought put into it, perhaps a rhythm game or something like that.
