The First Avenger Has a Director

Captain America in Action

AZM Ally Hawk sends word that Joe Johnston will be directing First Avenger: Captain America. Johnston’s previous directing credits include Godzilla vs San Deigo (aka Jurassic Park III) and Hidalgo. No word on writers or actors but the movie will be set in WW II so we can expect some righteous Nazi smashing and plenty of Jap bashing. The movie is set to release on my birthday (*glee*) May 6, 2011.

Have we done the casting game for Cap? I honestly can’t think of someone who would fit. I think a no name is probably the best bet, but if you guys have any idea, casting game GO!

I’m thinking Matt Damon could be a good choice.

Matt Damon plus 80lbs of muscle, maybe.

There are a few wrestlers that might not be terrible, with a good acting coach (John Cena or Randy Orton with tattoos covered up)

I think I might prefer a no name, though.

I think Adam Baldwin has a good look and certainly has the broad shoulders. If I recall, he also has a good voice for the role, having voiced Supes in Doomsday. Just make him blonde, and I say he’s a decent fit.

I have to second that thought for John Cena… most of the WWE roster can’t act out of a paper bag, but if nothing else he has the look and demeanor for the role. Cap is a soldier from the 40’s who goes from weakling to hulking superhuman… who better to portray him than this monster of a human being?

…Then again… I have heard a rumor that Brad Pitt was approached to take the role…

The rumors I heard were that Brad Pitt was being approached for Thor, which I think is fitting considering his performance in Troy.

In terms of persona, I think Leonardo DiCaprio really captures the feel of Cap, but obviously he doesn’t look the part. Though it can be pretty amazing how much some actors bulk up for roles.

    Rumors? I heard Will Smith!

Which, I think, wouldn’t be too bad, but I’m pretty sure it’s thouroughly unfounded.

If they do a similar presentation to what was done with Tim Roth is a similar film, we won’t need that much “bulk.”

Reynolds would probably bring too much sass, Damon could do it, as could Hartnett. Olyphant seems a bit weedy, as does Jude Law. Statham is too British. Cruise is too short. Dean Cain and Howie Long aren’t quite up to calibur.

    Schwarzenegger?

    Aaron “Nick Naylor” Eckhart.

All I know is, whoever they pick, he better have been born in the US of A. There would be nothing worse than having Captain America himself outsourced to another country for acting talent.

The best choices I’ve heard so far:
    - Aaron Eckhardt (if he hadn’t played Two-face, were a little younger and could pack on some muscle)
    - Jensen Ackles (if he had a bit more muscle and some more acting chops to play alongside Norton and Downey)
    - Jeffrey Donovan (could work since he looks young for his age and has the acting talent)
    - John Cena (if he can get a really good acting coach though I think the horrid failure of The Marine shows that he can’t carry a movie on his own)

The biggest problem is going to be finding an actor that not only looks like Captain America and can carry a movie as the lead actor, but also has the acting chops to play alongside seasoned veterans like Norton and Downey.

I’d go with Hartnett, he could capture that “Oh shit, I’m new to this whole being a super soldier deal, but I’m doing it for the greater good”. Or you could get Mike Vogel. Vogel plays a pretty badass hero in The Deaths of Ian Stone which was an indy film and he did decently as Rob’s brother from Cloverfield. You know, until he got killed.

    Adam Baldwin ftw! :D

Adam’s the Baldwin who doesn’t look like he’s trying to kiss his own lips, right? I could see him in there.

    Donovan’s another good one.

Wouldn’t mind seeing an unknown, to be honest.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and the name that abruptly came to mind for me was Michael C. Hall.

Though seeing everyone’s favorite serial killer as Captain America might be a bit of an abrupt turn… :)

Adam Baldwin’s the one who’s not a Baldwin brother and was on Firefly.

Oh man, I agree with jah - Aaron Eckhart would be spot on. Alternately, and I’m sure this is blasphemy, but Jami Bamber (Apollo from Battlestar Galactica) has the right clean cut look, even if he’s a Brit and it would be stupid and ironic or whatever.
