Could Wonder Woman Be Your Dreamgirl?

Beyonce

There are all sorts of rumors floating around about who will play Wonder Woman in the Just League of America flick. Variety has Jessica Biel in talks to play the mighty Amazon. But Angry Zen Minion S. Blue and AZM Allies Valerie and Dave Reimer point to a BBC article in which Beyonce said that she’d love to play Wonder Woman:

I want to do a superhero movie and what would be better than Wonder Woman? And it would be a very bold choice. A black Wonder Woman would be a powerful thing. It’s time for that, right?

Let’s put aside for the moment that she diva’d out and went all Diana Ross on her Destiny’s Child friends which is always, ALWAYS a dick move. Normally I think I’d call foul and yell that Diana should be played by a Greek woman. But for some reason, I don’t hate the idea of Beyonce playing Wonder Woman. I kind of look at it like Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin. He was the best part of that movie and played the role so well that now it’s hard for me to imagine anyone else playing Kingpin. If Beyonce turns in a great performance, I think I’d feel the same. ‘Course, if she botches it’ll end Wonder Woman’s movie career for good.

The thing is, out of all the superheroes, I feel that Wonder Woman is such a strong icon that she has the potential to transcend race. I think all women of all ethnicity can look to Wonder Woman for inspiration. That being said, I feel she deserves her own damn movie. She should have a solo pic before joining up with the JLA. If Catwoman can get a flick, surely Diana deserves her shot in the spotlight.

I both do and do not have issues with this for various reasons, but I’ll just say that if we’re going to be violating an established character’s entire history and background, then don’t throw it away on Beyonce. Give it to somebody with actual talent. I’ll take one Angela Bassett to fifty Beyonces any freaking day.

Oh wow! Angela Bassett would fucking ROCK! Maybe she would be a good Hipolyta and Halle Berry could be Diana. Or have Michele Yeoh as Hipolyta.

Maybe the reason Wonder Woman won’t get her own movie is because Cat Woman had it…that thing ruined it for all the other super ladies in the comics…

And thirded for the Bassett thing…she’s pull it off nicely.

Meh, I still like Lucy Lawless.

I remember her shoulders in Strange Days… Hell yeah, she could pull it off.

Looking at the all-knowing mad net-diety that is Wikipedia, it seems the area they were supposed to be from (Pontus) in eastern Turkey could make a good argument for a Persian actress (and we could certainly do with some Persians in non-terrorist roles).

I’d like to see Jessica Alba….Ahem, and I think she’d make a better Wonder Woman than Sue Storm.

Alba doesn’t seem big enough. She’s supposed to be a giant power house and Alba just seems to small. I’ve always thought Wonder Woman would have a very intimidating aura about her like one of those gigantic mountain men in the marines that you look and just know, he could break you in half with his little finger at a moments notice. A tough yet sensitive Wonder Woman just doesn’t feel right.

BeyoncĂ©, have to disagree with, for the previously stated reason… She’s not that great an actress.

If we’re doing the “let’s cast outside the established ethnicity” thing, then look at Gina Tores (Zoe from Firefly). Can totally see her kicking ass and looking regal at the same time.

Otherwise, I’d have to lean towards Eliza Dushku. We know she can pull off the stunts, thanks to her run on Buffy.

I have to say no to Beyonce… While I have no qualms at all with an actress of whatever color playing an amazon, to go with a black Diana because ‘It’s time for that, right?’ is crap. If the actress fits the part, YES. To do it just because we want a splash of color, WRONG. Doing it because Beyonce wants the part, when there are more talented actresses, even wrong-er…

Yusaku said it… Gina Tores… mmm… to quote Wash, ‘You know what it’s like to be married to a warrior woman?’ :) Tell me she wouldn’t have that je nais se quoi that Kevin talked about. Honestly, with her in mind, I can’t think of another actress, white or black, who I’d rather see as Diana.

Oh yes, Gina Tores would be the win! That would make me so happy. And I still want Angela Bassett in there as someone.
