Million Dollar Virgin
Premature research? Dichotomous nature between virginity and prostitution? Hur?
Part social experiment, part grad school payment plan, 22 year old San Diego native Natalie Dylan is selling her virginity online. To make things legal, she’s working with the Bunny Ranch in Nevada. She’ll split the winnings with the Ranch and consummate the transaction on the premises. Highest bid so far is $5.6 million.
Regarding prostitution, I’m with George Carlin. Fucking is legal. Selling is legal. Why isn’t selling fucking legal? I support Natalie’s right to sell herself for millions of freaking dollars. I do think that puts a lot of pressure on her. I mean, what is million dollar sex? But whatever man, you go girl.
Regarding feminism? I’m not so sure. I guess if you see prostitution as degrading, base, and amoral, there’s no way you would ever consider voluntarily selling yourself for sex feminist. If you don’t have a low opinion of selling sex, I kind of see how you could argue this is a form of feminism. This is a weird point to argue being a man, but what the hell.
More than equality, I think feminism is about the power to choose and to have those choices respected by society. If that’s the meaning we’re going with, the ability to choose how to use your body and have that choice respected could very well be empowering. No one is forcing her to sell her virginity. But there are other women who are forced into a life of prostitution. The power of choice has been taken from them.
I think you probably have to take it on a case by case basis. No one definition of feminism will fit every woman. So I guess if Natalie and her sister think this is a form of feminism, of empowerment, who am I to argue.
