Battlestar Galactica Movie?

Battlestar Galactica, 1978

Big giant RUMOR alert!

With the final season of the highly successful Battlestar Galactica reboot wrapping up and the new prequel series Caprica on its way, it would seem that we’ve got plenty of good sci fi programming to go around. While there have always been rumors about a feature film based on Galactica, now we’re getting word that a feature film is indeed in the works…

…wait for it…

…based on the original 1978 show!

I very much doubt it’ll star the same actors. Zarek is perfect as a dodgy, power mad, revolutionary turned politician, but he won’t cut it as an action star these days. And there’s no Lorn Green. My guess is that this will be a sort of reboot with a new cast, new sets and effects, but in the spirit of the original. This means no skin jobs, toasters will be toasters, and lots of sexy red-eyed “By your command.”

I have to admit, when I saw the pilot for the current Galactica series, I wasn’t quite on board with the skin jobs. Yes, there was much hotness abound. But I wasn’t sure about the Terminator 2 angle. Now that I’m fully into the skin jobs, it’s difficult to imagine Galactica without them.

This doesn’t sound like a good idea. The original series was fun, but it was a mindless sci-fi explody show with very little substance. The concept was freaking brilliant, but there was hardly any exploration of the human condition, at least not on the scale that we see in the new series. A movie based on the original show would amount to not much more than another effects ridden explosion fest. But who knows. This is all conjecture at this point since nothing official has been announced.

i saw mention of this yesterday, but wasn’t overly impressed. the guy is just trying to capitalize on the resurgent popularity of the show. i doubt that it will ever actually happen, because there won’t be enough thematic draw to get people to go see a big screen version of the show when it isn’t either the original or the new version.

Say it with me, Jamie: “No good can come of this.”

Me, I’m planing to buy the first two seasons and if I can swing it the first couple episodes of the third. I am all for the ‘splodies. It’s not a scifi show unless there’s ‘splodies or hacking or spaceships. There’s a reason that “future” lawyer/csi show failed miserably.

We best be seeing a lot of cape action. You’re no master of the galaxy or running things in the alpha quadrent without a cape.

I confess, I loved the original show, and never got into the new one. The new one is too emo for me, and if has that color filtration and color scheme i despise (everything in the world is either blue or yellow…i blame CSI for starting this nonsense). Maybe I would have liked it if it had a sense of humor…. And hadn’t been named after a show it bore little resemblance to….

However, a movie based on the old show? Bad plan!

The Colonial Warriors over at LJ’s Battlestar Blog totally LOST THEIR SHIT over this. MUCH commetage.

From my grumpy contribution: ” … What would be even worse… is Glen Larceny might try to set his film not in the “classic” continuity, but (sort of) in Mr Moore’s universe… or simply copping many of the trappings of the new series, girl starbuck, humanoid cylons, etc, — but none of the soul or any significant creativity. The world “heinous” occurs to me. This would be a pure exploitation movie, cashing in on the renewed popularity of the “brand”, and the hard work of Ron Moore and the cast and crew of BSG.”
