The Storm Warriors Go All 300

I nearly messed my pants when the sequel to Storm Riders, The Storm Warriors, was announced. And now we have the trailer. Hm…

Okay, if you never saw 300, this would be UH MAY ZING! But because we have 300 as a template for shooting green screen action flicks, you can’t help but pass this off as somewhat derivative. I really hope not all of the battle scenes are shot this way. There’s something to be said about two armies running at each other over a big desert. That’s such a stable of the epic chop socky genre. I can see that they want to break away from traditional kung fu epic tropes, but this preview reads too much like 300 Goes to China.

UPDATE: Well, there’s another trailer out there. More green screened slow mo. hmmm…

I’m sure the lawyers and martial artists like green screen better because it makes it look fake. Real martial arts (as in actual self defense) don’t look pretty very often, as well as using very very dirty tactics. I seem to recall Bruce Lee having a sparring match and being pinned (as unbelievable as that sounds) and being asked what he would do if it was a real fight. I think he responded with something along the lines of “bite your nose off” or something to that effect.

I hope that first video is just a flashback/storytelling opening sequence..

The first trailer seemed to have nothing to do with the Storm Riders at all. Where are the magical super powers? But the second made up for it by showing some kind of wind strike.

Well, at least they’re not just copying the ‘300 technique’ but rather trying something new with it. One thing is for sure, its looking very pretty so far.
