Star Wars Gets All Chick Flicky

Back in 2005 when rumors of a live-action CW-styled Star Wars television show first surfaced, the lads at Penny Arcade had this offering. Angry Zen Minion Nathan Yuen sends the latest word that indicates Penny Arcade’s take may not be that far off. According to “several inside sources,” the series will be shot in Australia and will pull in local writing talent including writers for “Love My Way” and “Secret Life of Us,” two award-winning Australian shows that focus on “relationships and emotional landscapes.”

What the hell is an emotional landscape and how do you keep its grass green?

Well, I guess it could be worse. Lucas could be writing it. Blech. I do think that relationships were a key component to Battlestar Galactica’s success. What hooked Audrey was the characters, not the tech. If the Star Wars television show has strong characters with interesting relationships, this could be worth watching.

Then again, this is all horrible rumor and speculation.

The maker says that it’s gonna be more like “Deadwood meets The Sopranos in space.”

Never seen the Sopranos (not into mob type stuff), but I liked Deadwood.

To be honest, though, as a life-long Star Wars nerd, I’m rather burnt out on Star Wars. The FIRST Clone Wars cartoon was excellent, but this new shit is just that - shit. They’re just milking the new young audience for what they know they can get. Sure it looks like a good plan for getting money now, but wait for the negative repercussions down the road when everyone, including the new young audience, is tired of it. If they do make it as described, I may be interested, but I’m expecting they’ll ride out all this new post-CW shit as long as possible. If not in content, then in style and quality.

Oh, and then again, I’m more into the Star Wars comics produced in the 90s (post ROTJ and Tales of the Jedi) than the new TV and movie stuff anyways. I like my Star Wars decrepid, grungy, and depressingly bleak. Not happy and 150% saturated with Anakin. So as burnt out on it as I am, I’m not terribly torn up about it because I can just go back a re-read old comics and stuff if I need a SW fix.

I’d watch an X-Wing miniseries. That was the shit man. This? Not so much.

Still trying to figure out the angle on this one.

I’m thinking it will be like Firefly - go a season, and then be cancelled.

actually - Love My Way and Secret Life Of Us were awesome. Comparing them to CW shows is like comparing Ergo Proxy to Scooby Doo. Not even the same ballpark.

@Kevin: YES. Battlestar Galactica really brought home the fact that military sci-fi can be done right on the small screen, and the X-Wing books/comics would be perfect for that kind of treatment.

With Whedon on dialog. The heavens shall open and the lightsabers shall descend. All we’ll need after that is to find out Mace Windu was a terminator and life shall be complete.
