In 2013, All Your Superman Are Belong to Siegel and Shuster

Superman

Warner Brothers and DC Comics just won this big case involving the Siegel heirs suing them over money Warner Brothers paid to DC Comics for the movie right to Superman. I think that’s how it goes. It’s all a very long and confusing money thing that might make sense if you have a better legal mind than I do (and I barely have a mind). But what’s important is that the rights to Superman revert back to the families of his co-creators in 2013. According to Marc Toberoff, the attorney representing Joanne Siegel and Laura Siegel Larson:

This trial was only an interim step in the multifaceted accounting case which remains, in that it only concerned the secondary issue of whether DC Comics, or DC Comics and Warner Bros., would have to account to the Siegels. To put this in further perspective, the entire accounting action pales in comparison to the fact that in 2013, the Siegels, along with the estate of Joe Shuster, will own the entire original copyright to Superman, and neither DC Comics nor Warner Bros. will be able to exploit any new Superman works without a license from the Siegels and Shusters.

Wow. Just wow!

The Siegel and Shuster kids will be living large in 2013 and beyond. There’s no way DC could stop publishing Superman comics. And I’m sure Warner Brothers is going to want to do another animated series with Supes and probably a film or two. Plus Smallville might still be kicking around. Maybe. And don’t forget all the Superman toys. My god, so much cash!

After all the people DC Comics has screwed over throughout their long and storied history, I believe this is karma coming back to kick them in the taint.
