Hip Hop Lives!

Thursday, November 12th, 2009 at 10:41 am by Jamie

In a musical landscape plagued with autotune, pop rap, and Soulja Boy it might feel that Hip Hop is dead or least sucking awful damn hard. But even in these tough, musical times, there are signs that Hip Hop, just like Megatron, still functions!

This is Lyric, A.K.A. Lyrical God who only needs a desk and two ballpoint pens to crank out tasty jams. Check this shit out.

My one hope is that if Lyric gets a deal, he keeps making his own beats with his pens. This shit doesn’t need autotune or fancy beats or hi fi. This shit needs to hit your ears raw!

This next jam is a little different. Brett Domino and pal pay tribute to some of the happiest songs in Hip Hop history using the Stylophone Beatbox, a portable beat machine you can pick up for $25.50 (USD).

See folks, it doesn’t have to be about bitches, drugs, or money to make a tasty jam. There was a time in history when Hip Hop was fun.

Hip Hop is still breathing. I’m waiting for the day when it rises up again and kicks the shit out of the radio. No more autotune. No more singing shitty hooks. No more remixes. Just raw beats and mad skills.

I believe Definitive Jux has a label full of hip hop artists that rap about more than bitches, drugs, and money. I will say, though, that some of their best songs are about those topics — just not in the way you think.

Vid one is sweet I’ll have to check the second out later. Recently I’ve learned that I really like the hip hop coming out of Canada (Classified, Shad, K’naan). This is one of the tracks that started it for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEU4jh1g9-4&feature=player_embedded

Saw the Lyrical God vid a while ago and thought to myself, “If this kid did this, and just this, he could sell the shit out of himself on the internet and avoid the Hip Hop record label sinkhole.” He has the talent to go very far by himself, without a deal, if he put the work into it or had people he trusted help him with that. The best part about the NEW internet music distribution model is that he will NEVER need to get signed if he doesn’t want to.

both videos are amazing. i had a smile on my face the entire time watching. as another person who hates auto-tune it’s really good to see that there are people out there doing their own thing.

Look for Ammunition by Lyric - its just as raw as Let the Beat Ride, but with more anger.

That video is a few years old too, he’s not a kid anymore - I think he’s signed to an indie label just doing a few cuts here and there. But its all simple Hip-Hop - the meat is in the lyric, not the gimmick.

Dan leSac vs Scroobius Pip make stuff that is genuinely intelligently designed. Hunt them out on Youtube and listen to any of their stuff - you won’t regret it.
