Ultimate Countdown to Infinite Crisis on Finite Earth One Remix A Go Go

Superman Earth One

For a few years now, a bunch of us old time comic fans have declared that pamphlets are dead, that single issues are no longer worth purchasing because of so-called decompressed storytelling, that trades and graphic novels are the future of comics. Well, it seems that DC is listening. Enter, Earth One.

Earth One is a whole new DC Universe that features updated origins of familiar characters to reflect contemporary times. Hey DC, Marvel from 2000 called, they want their Ultimate line back. Actually, in terms of rebooting continuity, DC has more experience with that than Marvel so maybe Crisis Era DC is calling 2000 era Marvel for its Crisis reboot back. Uh… my brain hurts now.

Anyway, Earth One. Yes. A whole new Earth. And a whole new approach to publishing, at least for DC. Instead of chucking out pamphlets of issues, Earth One will publish in graphic novel format. Superman: Earth One by writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Shane Davis and Batman: Earth One by writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank will hit shelves early next year with new origins for both DC icons.

What, no Wonder Woman? I thought DC was all about their pantheon, the big three, the Batman, the Superman, the Wonder Woman. What the fuck! Yeah, I think this is a great idea, but for fuck’s sake, I thought DC was starting to get the hint. Where’s Wonder Woman?!

So bravo to DC for trying out a new approach to publishing their new line. But fuck you to DC for forgetting one of their flagship characters. Fuck you very much.

Oh, and I predict Earth One will have a continuity shifting Crisis in about a year bringing them in to regular DC continuity. You know it’ll happen. They just can’t help themselves.

DC’s trinity has always been a marketing term. It’s the Big Two and sometimes Wonder Woman.

Since DC is phasing out the All-Star name, it’s possible Adam Hughes’ long delayed Wonder Woman solo story will be published under the Earth One title.

I gotta say I’m not liking this splash page of Superman though. Shane Davis doesn’t seem to quite capture Superman in a way that’s very appealing.
I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something about it just doesn’t look very… finished? Just doesn’t seem like something I’d expect from the desk of a DC professional.

I never really got why WW was one of the big three. Her villains kinda sucked, and she swapped rapidly between ‘trapped in the fifties’ and ‘deeply confused PVC undergarment model’ depending on the artist/writer combo in control. It felt like no-one really knew what to do with her.
Maybe this is for the best?

I think it’s because she was never out of print just like superman and batman. This was entirely because of trademark rules thought, the contract says that WW get’s X number of books per year or DC loses the license.

JMS doing superman sounds interesting, might pick it up, though like MikeyD said the Superman art there looks kinda off.

Kevin, while that was true pre crisis, DC flat-out bought the character after a little after that.

‘K, I did not know that.

I think I figured out why that shot looks so weird. Check the chest logo, it’s too big of a ration compared to his chest. Cut it down to about half that size and it would be perfect.
