Iron Man's New Armor

Now with more lights! Let’s hear what Iron Man writer Matt Fraction has to say about Tony’s new bling:

The inspiration for the new design came from thinking about a sleeker, leaner, tougher Iron Man. If technology is increasingly getting smaller and lighter it seems like the Iron Man should do the same: ergonomic and aerodynamic. We were looking for something that felt as sleek and glossy as a sports car Tony Stark would covet. I love what we’ve come up with. It feels like the next evolutionary step in the Iron Man’s design.

The new suit comes courtesy of Ryan Meinerding who was the designer on the Iron Man and upcoming Thor films. It’s gotta be the mech fan in me but I’m always a sucker for a new Iron Man suit. The new suit premiers in Invincible Iron Man #25 which hits shelves in April.

Iron Man’s redesigns have always been a slight refurbishing of previous models. This is no exception. However due to the flow of time, suits from only a few years ago look nothing like the ones today. This is one of my favorite parts about the Iron Man costume.

I’ve lately been thinking about this same trend. It seems to me, though, that the original red/gold “fabric” suits would be the more contemporary suits as research institutes develop hard fabrics and fabric-related technology. BMW is working on a concept car that the exterior is fabric-based.

Oh, forgot to comment on the new suit! I’m loving the new design, how instead of two colors operating in tandem as a color scheme, they’ve made it so the colors appear to be attached to a function (gold appears to be the base with red panels on top).
