Gundam Stream

This week, Bandai started their online Gundam streaming. It’s a shame they didn’t start during the SNOMGEDDON because then, none of us would have anything better to do. Your Gundam stream comes in three flavors, Crunchyroll, Anime News Network, and the YouTube. And I’ve got the handy dandy schedule right here:

YouTube

  • Mobile Suit Gundam (Eng Dub): Feb 20 – Mar 25
  • Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (Eng Dub): Feb 20 – Mar 25
  • Mobile Suit Gundam OO 1st Season (Eng Dub): Mar 25 – Apr 22
  • Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (Eng Dub): Mar 25 – Apr 22
  • Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (Eng Dub): Apr 22 – May 30
  • Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (Eng Dub): Apr 22 – May 30

Crunchyroll

  • Mobile Suit Gundam (Eng Dub): Feb 1 – Apr 22
  • Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (Eng Sub): Feb 20 – Apr 22
  • Mobile Suit Gundam OO 1st Season (Eng Sub): Feb 20 – Apr 22
  • Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (Eng Sub): Mar 25 – May 30

Anime News Network

  • Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (Eng Sub): Feb 1 – Apr 22
  • Mobile Suit Gundam (Eng Dub): Feb 20 – Apr 22
  • Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (Eng Sub): Feb 20 – Apr 22
  • Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (Eng Sub): Mar 25 – May 30

So it looks like if you want to check out a sub version of Mobile Suit Gundam, no luck there. Yet to be scheduled are 08th MS Team (one of my favorites), IGLOO (haven’t seen yet), War in the Pocket (my favorite until I saw 08th MS Team), Stadust Memory (I so heart Katoki’s designs in this), ZZ (haven’t seen yet), Char’s Counter Attack (still unsure about that ending), F91 (meh), and V (haven’t seen yet). I’m interested in checking out a few of the shows that I’ve missed. And I still haven’t quite sat through all of Zeta.

As a giant robot fan and Gundam fanatic, this is all a dream come true. However, I realize that giant robots aren’t exactly a hit with the US anime audience. It’d be interesting to see the stats on how well the streams do when the campaign is all over. It’ll probably help Bandai determine whether to bother giving us more Gundam love or just forgetting us all together. I hope the results are good because I want to see Master Grade kits in Toys R Us. So for the love of robots, please give some Gundam a try!

I’d always hoped Bandai would try to re-launch gundam in North America. It’s definitely my favorite anime franchise. I would say Zeta and Stardust Memory are my favorites. I picked up a copy of ZZ a while ago, its very back heavy. The first have is very juvenile, but the second half picks up the pace and deliver typical gundam action. It’s the canned animation that really kill that series, it’s pretty typical to have canned animation in a gundam series, but zz pushes it to the limit. Victory is not bad either, still haven’t finished it though. It would nice to get official releases for those missing chapters like ZZ and V here.

I’d love to see official releases of ZZ and V, but I fear that Bandai would screw us with some insanely high price. It might work in Japan because they lurvs the Gundam, but Gundam isn’t all that big here. When they figure that out and price it appropriately, I think they might get more fans.

IGLOO was okay, and it’s told entirely from the Zeon side so you get to see more of their suits. ZZ was meh as pointed out above. 08th MS and 0083 were by far my favorite.

IGLOO was another example of Bandai screwing up its North American Release. It was priced in the same tier as Unicorn. That’s just too much to pay few episodes…

I should check this out. I’ve always meant to watch some Gundam older than Wing.

    Don’t watch V.

    I mean, it’s good.

    But… damn. I mean, DAMN.

And some people thought Z was bad. >.>
