Speaking of badass ladies, at the six minute mark in the first part of Gundam Unicorn, we get to see Neo Zeon’s Marida Cruz completely dominate some Feddie Jeggans. Even the heavily armored Stark Jeggan is no match for Cruz’s Kshatriya.
Reviewing Gundam Unicorn seems a little premature after this first episode. It’s a lot of setup for things to come and a lot of reference to things that have happened in previous Universal Century Gundam shows. There’s an implication that something is not quite right with the UC and that something called “Laplace’s Box” holds to key to fixing everything. So either this is sort of an Alternate Universal Century or something else entirely.
The animation quality is absolutely superb. I can’t tell if the mobile suit animation is computer assisted or if it’s all hand animated, but the mobile suit fights are a thing of beauty. The Kshatriya’s initial dance of death is one of the best mech fights I’ve seen. I also love the shots that cut to Cruz’s hands while she’s tapping at the controls. Really puts you in the fight. God, the entire series would look so great on the big screen.
I’m pretty impressed so far. The English dub isn’t the best, but it doesn’t take away from the awesomeness. As an introduction, it’s done its job of making me want to see more. I just hope it pays off well. We get to see a few minutes of the Unicorn, but of course, they’re saving its proper debut for the second episode.
