Big Up Productions Shows Love to Us Gym Rats

Thursday, May 20th, 2010 at 10:21 am by Jamie

It’s been a while since I posted anything about climbing but this short film by Big Up Productions is just so awesome I had to share. I kind of feel like a fake since I’ve only ever climbed in a gym. I’ve done a few bouldering comps here and there and have even done some illustration work for Earthtreks. But the fact that I have yet to hit some real, outdoor, nature made, real goddamn rocks has given me a kind of weird sort of complex. I sincerely want to get outside, but my weekends have been filled with Art Fights and comics and family and friends and moves and all sorts of shit. So I haven’t really had time to get outside much.

I’m really glad that Big Up made this wonderful film because it helps me kind of get over my stupid indoor gym rat shame. Whether it’s pulling on plastic or crushing granite, climbing is climbing. And if you’re having fun, you’re doing it right. See you bitches in the gym!

It saddens me. I doubt I’ll ever have the upper-body strength to get my 250 lbs. over much of anything.

@Jack, it’s all in the legs! Seriously man, the legs are the most important in climbing. Upper body keeps you on the wall, the legs propel you up it!

I went and saw my old friend Gym today, hadn’t seen him in months. He must have been upset, I wanted to do the fun stuff we used to before I stopped coming by and he he kinda hurt me, my arms are all sore now. Gym is a cranky old bastard, but the more often you go see him the more used to each other you get, I suppose . . .

Man, you’re making me miss it even more. I have no climbing partner, and don’t even know where I can go climbing in this country :(

@fiftywan, aren’t you in Canada? There’s climbing all over Canada!! And some pretty sweet gyms if I hear correctly.

On the topic of Earthtreks, incidentally, David Hobby at his Strobist blog posted some shots he took for them. Content is photo tech heavy, but you may find it interesting.

    I’ve been a climber for quite a while…

While at the gym, I was introduced to the Dosage series… made by Big Up productions. It is pretty awesome. If you get a chance, check it out. And the music is great too.

Keep on the walls and try and get outdoors… real rock is fantastic!

I have always wanted to try indoor climbing. I am not under the false belief that I will be great at it but the experience looks like allot of fun. Alas, I have 4 kids and work opposite hours of my wife so I always have something more pressing to be doing (work and baby-herding) so I doubt I will ever get the chance before I am 35ish at least. How much are the shoes on average? I’m in britain, where they say £60 ($80) upwards, but i’ve heard they can be imported for less?

@Jaxomdad, no worries about age. I’ve seen dudes over 60 crushing it in the gym and talking about their latest outdoor sessions all the time. Also a crap ton of kids are into it. Maybe you can convince your kids to start and hop on with them!

@joyvision, I’ve seen shoes for like $60USD. If you’re a member of the gym, you get a discount. But REI sometimes has a big ass sale and you can get rock climbing shoes for less than you’d normally pay.

@joyvision one thing to do before ordering shoes online is try them on someplace. Climbing shoes can very greatly from style to style, brand to brand, not to mention completely different from other shoes.

@jaxomdad I see quite a few kids at the gym I go to as well, I have seen a couple people belaying 2 or 3 kids at once. Of course with GriGri’s and the friction of the rig it generally seems like they have to pull the rope back through to lower the kids down at the end.

nah, I’m in Czech Republic now. Moved back to France in 2009, and now I moved 40km away from Prague. Problem is, no climbing partner, don’t speak the language. Pretty tough to find a gym in those conditions :(
