Powers Coming to FX

AZM Ally Kensei Dave writes in with word that Powers is coming to FX. Powers, written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Mike Oeming, centers around two detectives who investigate homicides perpetrated by super powered beings. Think “Heroes” mixed with “CSI.” The series is in active development with FX. Powers was once optioned for a feature length film by Sony Pictures, but that fell through. The screenwriters just didn’t get the comic. This time around, Bendis will be handling the scripting for the pilot.

I have yet to jump on the Powers bandwagon. So Powers fans, looking forward to a television series? Or is this something best left alone? I think with Bendis’s direct involvement, there’s a greater chance it will closely mirror the source material.

Guest Review of Wolverine and the X-Men

Wolverine and Friends

Angry Zen Minion Kyle Goodrich sent along this guest review of “Wolverine and the X-Men:”

Ok well sorry it took a while but I wanted to see Wolverine and the X-men beyond it’s premier. To start with I will warn all the fans this is a new story line with different character set up so if you don’t like other people taking liberties with your favorite comics then I would skip this. Wolverine is not the hard person we all know and love rather he is the leader and seems to take it well, depending on other people taking charge you know being the leader type. The rest of the cast so far is Forge the team mechanic, Beast the brains with the brawn, Kat uhh she walks though stuff, Iceman ill let the name speak for its self; Frost a telepath who reads before asking, and Cyclopes who takes Wolverine old role.

The story thus far is Jean and Xavier disappear in an “explosion”(the quotes are because there was not scientific cause just one minute they are there the next every thing around the is in ruin). Xavier shows up on Magneto’s island in a coma. After bringing him back to the institute he makes contact from the future where the world is in ruin and every one is dead and only the X-men can change that. For more in-depth details you will have to watch the show, but so far it has me hooked.

From there I will go into the style for one it is not anime, which as much as I am a fan of, I am happy for it. It is very sharp very angled faces and square bodies but all in all very pleasing to the eyes or at least mine. It also has a very wide color range, good back ground and foreground art as well as lighting; the explosions are nice along the same lines of being smooth well lit and not to fake looking.

So now for my personal impressions I like the show, the art is nice and mildly original. The story is fairly original, I know were all a little tired of Wolverine but if you look at this with a new mind; never having seen or heard of X-men then you would be set to enjoy a pretty good series as it seems so far. I like the uniforms so far as well the personalities seem to complement each other well even though they are very different from the ones we know and love.

I really hope Emma and Scott are together in this version. I hate Scott with Jean. She uses him as a door mat and he moons over her constantly. When he’s with Emma, he’s so much more badass. I’m kind of tired of Wolverine this, Wolverine that, but I may have to check out a few episodes. I think you can watch full episodes online through their website.

Thanks for the review, Kyle!

Stan Lee And Marvel Sued Over Spider-Man

Stan Lee Spidey

In 2005, Stan Lee sued the company over profits from the first Spider-Man film. He won a $10 million settlement. Well, it seems the past returns. From our frivolous lawsuit department comes word from AZM Ally Greg that Stan Lee and Marvel are once again involved in an idiotic legal battle, only this time on the same side. Stan Lee Media Inc is suing both its founder, Stan Lee, and Marvel over film and comic profits totaling $750 million dollars.

Facepalm Piccard

Let’s rewind, shall we. On the back of the 90’s comic boom, in 1998 Stan Lee created Stan Lee Media Inc to create a line of internet super heroes that would star in their own animated comic. The company eventually went public. Sadly, by 2001 Stan Lee Media Inc was forced to close its doors thanks to stock manipulation charges levied against its corporate officer Stephan Gordon and Lee’s lawyer Peter Paul. Stan Lee Media Inc reemerged in 2006 with heads firmly up their ass.

In their suit against Stan Lee and Marvel, Stan Lee Media Inc alleges that Stan signed over ownership rights of characters he created for Marvel to Stan Lee Media Inc and that profits from any comics or movies made from those characters should go to them. This makes no sense. Stan created Spider-Man et. al under a work-for-hire contract. All the characters he created and co-created are the sole property of Marvel. Even if he wanted to, Stan can’t sign the ownership rights of those characters to anyone.

I hope the judge gets a big chuckle out of this because Stan Lee Media Inc has no leg to stand on. Idiots.

Destro And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skulls

Destro

This is the issue #2 cover for IDW’s G.I. Joe Movie Prequel comic featuring the Doctor, Christopher Eccleston, as Destro with a shiny behind him. Pretty decent likeness. This is our first look at Destro’s mask. Shiny.

The mask doesn’t look terribly bad. I wonder if it’s mouth and eyes will move like they did in the cartoon. I suspect it would look a bit silly. More importantly, I want to see Eccleston with a big open chested shirt with an awesome red disco collar and a flashy ruby necklace.

Learn How To Draw With Manga Start

Manga Start

A friend of mine, Mai from PMBQ Studios, got together with a bunch of her friends to create Manga Start, a free resource for learning how to draw the mangas. The lessons are quite good. They take a step by step approach teaching you the theory behind each line. They also provide free exercises for you to download and practice to develop your technique. They’ve also developed lesson plans for teachers K-12. Freaking awesome!

So if you’ve ever wanted to learn the basics of drawing or need to brush up on certain areas, definitely check them out.

If Catwoman Went Straight…

Bats and Cats

Context? Who needs your dirty context!

AZM Ally Greg sent along this panel that Neil Gaiman posted of an upcoming Batman arc he’s writing. That’s Scott Williams’ inks over Andy Kubert’s pencils with a bit of naughty dialog that is taken completely out of context. I suspect that Catwoman is talking about going straight in terms of giving up her life of crime. But the pervert in me suspects that she’s talking about her sexual preference or maybe even her kinky sexual needs.

With Selina and Bruce in their old costumes, I’m guessing this scene is a flashback from someone. Kubert’s pencils evoke a very Neil Adams style Batman. Looks pretty good to me. Might even have to start reading Batman again.

Thanks for the heads up Greg.

Wallace Wells Cast!

If Scott Pilgrim’s life had a face, Kieran Culkin would punch it!

Kieran Culkin has been cast as Scott Pilgrim’s sexy hottie-chan gay roommate Wallace Wells. Culkin joins Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers, and Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Stephen Stills’s bitchy girlfriend.

So I’m really excited for Bryan Lee O’Malley. The fifth volume of Scott Pilgrim is about to drop next month (totally getting it) and the movie comes out later this year. It must be so gratifying for a comic creator to see their work in a completely different medium. I hope he’s getting fat checks because he deserves big sacks of cashola for such a wonderful property. At the same time, I’m a little worried. Scott Pilgrim works so amazingly well in comic form that it’s hard for me to imagine it as anything else. Certainly, I think Michael Cera plays a lot of characters that are pretty much exactly like Scott. But he doesn’t really come to mind when I think of Scott. Actually, no one really comes to mind when I think about the cast except O’Malley’s art. It’ll be weird seeing them on screen.

No doubt, this is going to be such a fun movie. Perfect date movie. Perfect geek movie. I’m going to see it. Multiple times, if possible. It really sounds like the director gets it. So if he’s happy and Bryan is happy, I’m happy. I’m cautiously looking forward to this and hoping for the absolute best. Scott Pilgrim deserves no less.
